Garmin launches StreetPilot onDemand iPhone app, offers transit schedules

Garmin is best known for its in-car navigation systems, but today delved deeper into the realm of personal navigation with a brand new iPhone app for the eternally lost. For a dollar, you'll get standard walking, driving and public transportation directions, but go premium for $2.99 a month or $29.99 for the year, and you'll cop more add-ons designed to transform your iPhone into a full-fledged PND. Like the standard iPhone mapping system or HopStop, the subscription-based version of this app lets you integrate public transportation into your journey -- but the added feature here is the ability to view public transit schedules like you can in the Google Maps app for Android. It also has spoken turn-by-turn directions, Garmin's traffic routing and Google search, making it a handy alternative to a clunky navigation system. Check out the full PR after the break.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: The most 'groundbreaking' game ever? (The Week)

New York ? The new video-game allows players to embody an ex-SWAT specialist in the year 2027, and grants them unprecedented decision-making abilities as they navigate the futuristic world

Decision-making has always been a part of video games, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution ? released last week on Xbox, PS3, and PC ? takes it to a new level. Players take on the role of ex-SWAT specialist Adam Jensen, who, in the year 2027 specializes in biomechanical human augmentation. When Jensen discovers he's been augmented himself, he sets out to find who is responsible, an odyssey in which players have seemingly endless choices to make, and each one really impacts what happens down the line. "You feel that you are Adam Jensen," says Ebenezer Samuel at the Daily News. Is this the most "groundbreaking" game of the year?

Yes. The game never gets old: The genius of Deus Ex is all of the options it affords you, says Steve Trader at The San Diego Examiner. Unlike most games, players aren't confined to a storyline in order to complete a mission. Instead, they're "simply told of a goal and then let loose to explore the environment and accomplish it." This makes "the game new and exciting each time you play it."
"Deus Ex: Human Revolution hits shelves today to much acclaim"

Hopefully, other games follow suit: Deus Ex is for gamers "who like to add a little thinking to their shooting," says Tom Price at Game Pro. As players move through the game's world, there's a "consistent mental challenge" that's lacking in most other video games. Deus Ex puts "strategy over spectacle" ? let's hope more shoot-em-up role-playing games will start to adopt this level of sophistication.
"Review: Deus Ex: Human Revolution"

Actually, it's not that revolutionary: All the flexibility is nice, says Arthur Gies at IGN, but "some major plot decisions are made for you." That includes the biggest decision of all ? centering Deus Ex around one of the most tedious, uninventive tropes of gaming: Boss battles. One-on-one battles with a "Big Bad" stretch back to the days of classic Nintendo and Super Mario ? a "disappointing and 'gamey'" flaw for what's supposed to be a revolutionary game.

LG releases Optimus S Gingerbread source, no sign of the update just yet

LG Thunder source

LG has released the Kernel source and assorted GPL bits for the Gingerbread build on their Optimus S device.  No reports of anything showing in the LG updater tool just yet, and rumor says mid-September for an OTA.  For now, this just means that our resident Optimus warlords (yes, they have transcended developer status) have some new code to play with and see if they can improve the Gingerbread builds they have had running for the Optimus S for quite a while.  Realistically, there will be a few things here of value for all Optimus developers, who have been forced to use hacks and work arounds for some of the closed-source functionality from LG.  With this new codebase, expect your favorite Gingerbread ROM for the Optimus S to get even better.

Health Insurance About To Get Very Expensive For America's ...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Paying for health insurance gets a lot more expensive this week for the unemployed.

Millions of unemployed Americans pay for health insurance offered by their old companies through COBRA, and the federal government has been helping pay those premiums as part of the federal stimulus act.

But that assistance ends September 1st, according to Laval Miller-Wilson, executive director of the Pennsylvania Health Law Project.

?For a typical family the subsidy reduced the cost of their health care costs to $4,725 a year, now it will increase to $13,000,? he says.

And Miller-Wilson says this will result in more people dropping health insurance because they can?t afford it, and turning to the emergency room for primary medical care.
