Ash leads Texas over Cal 21-10 in Holiday Bowl

(AP) ? David Ash threw for one touchdown and caught a TD pass to lead Texas to a 21-10 victory against California in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night.

The Longhorns (8-5) had five takeaways and sacked Cal's Zach Maynard six times.

The Golden Bears (7-6) are winless in five games against the Longhorns dating to 1959.

Ash caught a 4-yard pass from wide receiver Jaxon Shipley in the second quarter to join BYU's Steve Young, Texas A&M's Bucky Richardson and Oregon's Joey Harrington as quarterbacks who've caught scoring passes in the Holiday Bowl.

Texas coach Mack Brown joked on Tuesday how much it still bugged him that Harrington caught a TD pass in the Ducks' 35-30 win against Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. The Oregon offensive coordinator then was Jeff Tedford, who has been Cal's coach since 2002. Harrington now works for the Longhorn Network.

Seven women who shaped the world in 2011

Women played some significant roles this past year, from making peace to crafting economic policy in the midst of a crisis. Here are seven who shaped 2011:

- Whitney Eulich,?Correspondent

Running the country with the fourth largest gross domestic product in the world is reason enough to be deemed one of the most prominent women in the world.?But as the European Union struggles to contain its debt crisis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also become the de facto leader of the eurozone. Because of Germany?s economic strength, no eurozone decisions can be made without her support.

Le Monde reports that in a recent poll in France, 46 percent of people reported?having more confidence in Ms. Merkel?s leadership and ability to avoid a future financial crises?than they do in that of their own president, Nicolas Sarkozy (33 percent).

In 2011, several EU member countries faced the collapse of their financial institutions, high government debt, and rapidly rising borrowing costs. Merkel was faced with the challenge of finding a balance between pressure from within Germany not to fund future economic bailouts and calls from other EU countries to provide further assistance. Throughout the crisis, Merkel has urged fiscal discipline and demanded leadership changes and austerity measures in countries like Italy and Greece.

If the eurozone survives this turbulent period, Merkel will be lauded as the heroine that saved the European Union.

Sammi Giancola Previews "Happier" Season of Jersey Shore

After some fistfights with JWoww and screaming matches with Ronnie, Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola somehow managed to mellow out in Season 4 of Jersey Shore.

What can we expect from her in the coming fifth season?

"We were so happy to be home," she said. "We went straight from Italy to Seaside with no breaks, so we were extremely comfortable with each other."

"You're gonna see a happier side of Jersey Shore."

Sammi Sweetheart Photo

At least for a time. There are apparently some explosive developments this season (and every season), namely Vinny Guadagnino peacing out of Seaside.

Don't expect too much drama from Sam, though.

"The new season was actually really good for me and Ron," she said. "But then things happened - and now we're single. I'm just working on myself now."

No word if she and Ron have gotten back together in the time it took us to put together this post, but check out the Jersey Shore Season 5 trailer below:

IMF says expects January talks with Egypt (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday it planned to meet with Egyptian authorities to discuss the country's economic problems but added that any funding would have to be based on benchmarks that had broad political support.

Egypt, whose economy has been hammered by the uprising that unseated Hosni Mubarak in February, turned down a $3 billion IMF facility in June, but ministers have indicated the country may now be prepared to return to the negotiating table.

"The IMF team is looking forward to discussions in January with the authorities on their economic program to address Egypt's difficult economic and financial situation," an IMF representative said in an emailed statement. It said it was too early to discuss specific measures.

Economists say Egypt is heading for a currency crisis if it does not swiftly stabilize an economy battered by the political turmoil, which has prompted an exodus of investors and tourists.

Because of worsening economic conditions the country may now need as much as $15 billion to stave off a full-blown financial crisis, some economists say.

Dozens of protesters have died in clashes with the army, the budget deficit has mushroomed, the cost of domestic borrowing has increased, foreign reserves have fallen and demand for Egypt's exports has fallen as the global economy weakened.

The IMF said it had remained "in close contact" with Egyptian authorities since early November on possible funding, but security concerns caused it to postpone a planned visit to Cairo in mid-December.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Kamal Ganzouri said told the nation on television that Egypt had gone to the IMF but the international body had not responded.

"Regarding the IMF, we were told it was necessary for Egypt to deal with the IMF to get loans. Our colleagues made the request, but nothing has come yet ... today we still request but they (the IMF) asked for a short delay."

EXTREME NEED

In its statement, the IMF said benchmarks for any funding package would need to "come from a program that is designed and owned by the Egyptian authorities and enjoys the broad political support necessary for its successful implementation."

On most occasions as government officials seem to edge close to signing up, Egypt's army has indicated its reluctance.

"The easiest thing would have been for the military council to accept the loans from abroad, give it to Egyptians to live a better life and then hand over power and the Egyptian people would have been responsible to repay these debts," General Mokhtar al-Mullah told reporters this month.

"So we have said that these loans are only for extreme need," Mullah told a group of reporters.

Al-Ahram newspaper reported on Sunday that the governor of Egypt's central bank and four ministers had agreed the country had no choice but to borrow money from abroad to plug a $10 billion to $12 billion financing gap.

It quoted the Central Bank Governor Farouk el-Okdah as saying the budget deficit in the year that began on July 1 could rise as high as 182 billion Egyptian pounds ($30.2 billion) instead of the 134 billion forecast last June.

Egypt's foreign currency reserves plunged to about $20 billion in November from $36 billion at the end of 2010, and economists say this could force the country to devalue its currency as soon as the first quarter of 2012.

50 Cent, Common, Others Share New Year's Resolutions

'My New Year's resolution is to quit smoking ... it's a very dirty, filthy habit,' Travie McCoy tells us.

Wondering what some of the biggest names in the music industry are resolving to do come 2012? Well, wonder no more. MTV News asked some of those folks just that, and they are dishing on what their New Year's resolutions are for the next 12 months.

"Ah man, so many. So many new things to work on myself. I just got to be conscious, more conscious of myself," 50 Cent explained. "And try and be a better judge of character with others."

Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy seems to be taking a page from Fiddy's handbook and looking to better himself in the new year. "My New Year's resolution is to quit smoking ... it's a very dirty, filthy habit," he said. "But not [only] is it my New Year's resolution to quit, but it's also my New Year's resolution to get my friends to quit as well."

Common opened up about the philosophical goal he hopes to achieve in the coming year. "I haven't thought deeply on it, but I would say I just want to be great at everything I do," he said. "Greatness."

Some celebrities are planning to look inward in the new year, and others, it seems, want to physically broaden their horizons. Jill Scott said, "I'd like to visit Europe more often next year."

Meanwhile, Evanescence's Amy Lee wants to travel in order to meet more of her devoted fans. "We're gonna make it a goal to just go to all those countries where we have fans going, 'Hey come to my country. You've never been here.' That's sort of our goal for next year is to go everywhere and tour all the places we've never been and see the world," she said. "Have some fun."

Before making those resolutions a reality, many celebrities will be out and about on New Year's Eve looking to break loose at a number of big New Year's parties. And MTV will also be getting in on the fun during "NYE in NYC 2012," which will feature Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller and more. The show airs live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday from Times Square, where the famous ball drops.

Philippine storm death toll goes down to 1,249 (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Philippine disaster management officials say the number of people who died in massive flash floods in the southern Mindanao region a week ago was smaller than earlier reported.

Civil Defense chief Benito Ramos said Tuesday that he has corrected an earlier death toll from the health department of nearly 1,500 to 1,249 based on an actual count of identified and unidentified bodies recovered by soldiers, police, firemen and other rescue workers.

He says the exact number of missing could no longer be determined but the search for bodies will continue.

He says rains overnight Monday over the eastern provinces of Mindanao have forced the evacuation of thousands of families, many by helicopter.

What worries us most: Economic collapse

By Allison Linn

Natural disasters, terrorist attacks, global disease ? if you?re so inclined, there?s no shortage of major issues to fret about these days.

Still, a new poll finds that the catastrophic event Americans are most likely to be worried about is economic collapse.

The pollsters asked Americans to choose the top three catastrophic events that worry them the most. The top choice was ?economic collapse,? with 63 percent choosing that option.

Natural disaster was second, at 46 percent, and terrorist attack ranked third at 44 percent.

Market research firm Leiflin Inc. asked the question on behalf of the EcoHealth Alliance, a conservation group that also works on global disease issues. One-third of the people surveyed said they a global disease outbreak was one of their top three worries.

The poll of about 1,000 Americans, conducted this fall, had a margin of error of 3 percent.

The pollsters did not specify whether they were referring to global or national economic collapse. Still, after four years of very difficult economic times, it?s no surprise economic worries are top of mind for many Americans.

GSM phones vulnerable to hijack scams: researcher (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? Flaws in a widely used wireless technology could allow hackers to gain remote control of phones and instruct them to send text messages or make calls, according to an expert on mobile phone security.

They could use the vulnerability in the GSM technology -- which is used by most telecom operators globally and by billions of people -- to make calls or send texts to expensive, premium phone and messaging services in scams, said Karsten Nohl, head of Berlin-based Security Research Labs.

Nohl is a well-regarded expert on mobile security who last year identified a bug in GSM technology that makes calls vulnerable to tapping. He says he is calling attention to these flaws to pressure the industry into beefing up the security of their products.

Mobile security is a hot issue because hackers are paying unprecedented attention to the devices as smartphone sales have outpaced sales of PCs.

Only a few flaws have been found in GSM technology - which stands for Global System for Mobile Communications - over its 20-year history. Industry lobby group GSMA said on Tuesday it did not expect the new findings to affect its views on the security of the technology.

"The GSMA and its mobile network operator members are confident in the security of existing 2G GSM networks and real attacks on real networks against real customers are most unlikely," it said in a statement, adding that newer technologies are safer and not impacted by the new research.

GSMA's statement "on anticipated GSM security announcements" did not make clear whether the industry group had actually seen Nohl's latest research.

Security experts have previously identified a small number of viruses designed to infect smartphones, allowing hackers to take control of the devices and force them to make calls or send text messages. But Nohl said he has discovered a way to leverage previously disclosed vulnerabilities in GSM technology that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of phones.

"We can do it to hundreds of thousands of phones in a short time frame," Nohl told Reuters ahead of a presentation on the topic at a hacking convention in Berlin on Tuesday.

SECTOR IN FOCUS

Smartphone malware is popping up at an unprecedented rate as people put more and more valuable information on the devices, using them to hold corporate secrets, conduct banking and function as digital wallets.

GSM became the dominant mobile technology globally in the late 1990s and even though new, faster mobile networks have been rolled out across the world, operators have stuck to their GSM networks to support older phones and to offer service when new networks fail.

The Berlin convention takes place just days after U.S. security think tank Strategic Forecasting Inc (Stratfor) said its website had been hacked and that some names of corporate subscribers had been made public. Activist hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility.

Attacks on corporate landline phone systems are fairly common, often involving bogus premium-service phone lines that hackers set up in countries in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.

Fraudsters make calls to the numbers from hacked business phone systems or mobile phones, then collect their cash and move on before the activity is identified.

The phone users typically do not realize the problem until after they receive their bills, and telecommunications carriers often end up footing at least some of the costs.

Even though Nohl will not present all details of possible attacks at the conference, he said hackers will usually replicate the code needed for attacks within a few weeks.

T-MOBILE, SFR LEAD NEW RANKING

Mobile networks of Germany's T-Mobile and France's SFR offer their clients the best protection against online criminals wanting to intercept their calls or track their movements, according to a new ranking Nohl will unveil at his presentation.

The new ranking, at gsmmap.org, is conducted by security researchers, who hope this will heighten the awareness of operators and consumers on the vulnerability of their mobile communications.

Researchers reviewed 32 operators in 11 countries and rated their performance based on how easy it was for them to intercept the calls, impersonate someone's device or track the device.

"None of the networks protects users very well," Nohl said.

The sample is set to grow from 32 carriers dramatically next year as the tool enables anyone to participate in data gathering

by downloading measuring software to their phones.

Nohl said mobile telecom operators could easily improve their clients' security, in many cases by just updating their software.

Researchers reviewed operators in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Slovakia, Switzerland and Thailand.

Twin probes to circle moon to study gravity field (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The moon has come a long way since Galileo first peered at it through a telescope. Unmanned probes have circled around it and landed on its surface. Twelve American astronauts have walked on it. And lunar rocks and soil have been hauled back from it.

Despite being well studied, Earth's closest neighbor remains an enigma.

Over the New Year's weekend, a pair of spacecraft the size of washing machines are set to enter orbit around it in the latest lunar mission. Their job is to measure the uneven gravity field and determine what lies beneath ? straight down to the core.

Since rocketing from the Florida coast in September, the near-identical Grail spacecraft have been independently traveling to their destination and will arrive 24 hours apart. Their paths are right on target that engineers recently decided not to tweak their positions.

"Both spacecraft have performed essentially flawlessly since launch, but one can never take anything for granted in this business," said mission chief scientist Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The nail-biting part is yet to come. On New Year's Eve, one of the Grail probes ? short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory ? will fire its engine to slow down so that it could be captured into orbit. This move will be repeated by the other the following day.

Engineers said the chances of the probes overshooting are slim since their trajectories have been precise. Getting struck by a cosmic ray may prevent the completion of the engine burn and they won't get boosted into the right orbit.

"I know I'm going to be nervous. I'm definitely a worrywart," said project manager David Lehman of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the $496 million, three-month mission.

Once in orbit, the spacecraft will spend the next two months flying in formation and chasing one another around the moon until they are about 35 miles above the surface with an average separation of 124 miles. Data collection won't begin until March.

Previous missions have attempted to measure lunar gravity with mixed success. Grail is the first mission dedicated to this goal.

As the probes circle the moon, regional changes in the lunar gravity field will cause them to speed up or slow down. This in turn will change the distance between them. Radio signals transmitted by the spacecraft will measure the slight distance gaps, allowing researchers to map the underlying gravity field.

Using the gravity information, scientists can deduce what's below or at the lunar surface such as mountains and craters and may help explain why the far side of the moon is more rugged than the side that faces Earth.

The probes are officially known as Grail-A and Grail-B. Several months ago, NASA hosted a contest inviting schools and students to submit new names. The probes will be christened with the winning names after the second orbit insertion, Zuber said.

Besides the one instrument on board, each spacecraft also carries a camera for educational purposes. Run by a company founded by Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, middle school students from participating schools can choose their own lunar targets to image during the mission.

A trip to the moon is typically relatively quick. It took Apollo astronauts three days to get there. Since Grail was launched from a relatively small rocket to save on costs, the journey took 3 1/2 months.

Scientists expect the mission to yield a bounty of new information about the moon, but don't count on the U.S. sending astronauts back anytime soon. The Constellation program was canceled last year by President Barack Obama, who favors landing on an asteroid as a stepping stone to Mars.

Maccabee/Syrian 'Angry Birds'? You bet, at York's Jewish Community Center

It was "Angry Birds" meets ancient Jewish history.

The battle between the Maccabee soldiers and the Syrian army that took place more than 2,000 years ago was re-enacted Sunday at York's Jewish Community Center -- in the style of the popular "Angry Birds" video game.

True to history, the Maccabees won, helping to preserve religious freedom.

Kids shot kickballs out of a life-size slingshot toward blow-up pigs and boxes -- the kickballs were marked with Jewish symbols, and the pigs represented the Syrian army.

Nine-year-old Leon Bellenbaum, of Springettsbury Township, said his family attends the Celebrate Chanukah event every year, but this year he was looking forward to the

"Angry Birds" battle the most.

Leon and his brother Simon, 5, raved about the latke-eating contest, too.

The event began with a social period and a menorah lighting, then broke off into other activities such as a dreidel hunt, Hanukkah "Jeopardy" and face-painting for all ages before the final battle.

Laura Merklin -- the youth, teen and family coordinator for the JCC -- said the event strives to provide Jewish children with meaningful experiences and educate the community about the Hanukkah season.

Merklin, of York Township, said she came up with the "Angry Birds" simulation from a YouTube video and decided it was a good way for kids and community members to visualize the complexities of the war between the Maccabees and the Syrians.

"We really wanted to do something fun and something that would get the kids going," Merklin said.

JCC Programming Director Bill Walter, of New Jersey, said the education hidden among the games and fun activities of the day was the most important part of the celebration.

"(The events) bring back old traditions of Hanukkah," Walter said.

Authorities: 3 Americans Among Mexico Victims

(CNN) -- Three of the seven victims of a highway attack this week in the Mexican state of Veracruz were American citizens, officials said.

A mother and her two daughters, dual Mexican-U.S. citizens who lived in Fort Worth, Texas, were aboard one of three buses that were attacked by gunmen in the city of Panuco, in the northern part of Veracruz.

"We express our deepest condolences to their family and friends during this difficult time," State Department spokeswoman Neda Brown said.

A Mexican official in the state of Hidalgo, the hometown of the mother, identified the Americans as Maria Sanchez Hernandez and her two daughters, Karla, 19, and Cristina, 13.

The buses were on a road between the towns of Tempoal and Panuco near the border of Veracruz and Tamaulipas, Mexican and U.S. government officials said.

CNN.com: More violence in Veracruz

An American consulate general statement warned American citizens to "exercise caution and remain vigilant when traveling in the state of Veracruz. American citizens residing in, visiting or traveling through the northern portion of Veracruz that borders Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi should maintain a heightened sense of alert." Inter-city road travel at night should be avoided, the consulate general said.

Central California SPCA needs more help for ailing horses

The public is responding to the plight of 30 neglected and malnourished horses found at two farms in Fresno County over the past week, contributing more than $2,000 in donations to provide feed and care for the animals.

But officials at the Central California Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said they remain in need of more donations of cash, hay, food and supplies to properly care for the horses. The sudden influx of large livestock has created a pressing need for portable corral fencing that has been part of an ongoing fundraising campaign as well.

"Our target for building the corral was $11,000, and that's just for the outside corral fence itself," said Beth Caffrey, the SPCA's humane education administrator. But, she added, that was for a much smaller corral to cope with only a handful of horses including four that were seized in October.

Caffrey said SPCA officials have yet to determine how much more space and corral fencing they will need to accommodate additional horses from the two neglect cases last week. So far, she said, the SPCA had raised $5,000 for the corral.

Nineteen starving horses were found Tuesday on a ranch on East Shepherd Avenue, north of Clovis. One had to be euthanized because it was severely malnourished. The owner of the horses was arrested for suspicion of felony animal abuse and is free on bond.

On Friday, a second herd of hungry and dehydrated horses was discovered on a ranch on South Garfield Avenue near Riverdale. Officials said 14 horses were found at the ranch, and two were euthanized because of their poor condition. Four dead horses were also found on the ranch. The horses' owner is reportedly out of the country but could face arrest for animal cruelty, officials said.

In addition to the surge in cash donations, some donors have also provided hay to help feed the horses, Caffrey said. On Saturday, Caffrey said it can cost up to $10 per day to feed each horse. Among the other supplies needed to care for the horses are halters, ropes, and buckets, tubs and troughs for food and water.

On Friday, Caffrey suggested it could cost as much as $60 to $70 daily to feed each horse. She said the cost was so high because the afflicted animals have special nutritional needs and because many of the horses are wild and waste much of their feed.

Horse owners and livestock feed store operators, however, said the SPCA's figure was unrealistically high. Based on the current prices of hay and feed supplements, they said, it should cost $5 to $7 a day to feed a healthy adult horse. A malnourished horse would need some additional feed and care, they said, but nowhere near $60 or $70 a day.

Caffrey said Saturday that she re-estimated the feed cost after checking with horse experts.

Japan looking to buy Chinese government bonds (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Japan will seek to buy Chinese government bonds, the Japanese government said in a statement issued after Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda held talks in Beijing with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday.

The statement given to reporters gave no details of when Japan might seek to buy the bonds or on what scale.

Japan had earlier indicated it is in talks to buy Chinese government debt to strengthen economic ties.

Despite sometimes rancorous political ties between the two neighbors, Japan's economic fortunes are increasingly tied to China's economic growth and consumer demand.

China has been Japan's biggest trading partner since 2009.

In 2010, trade between the two nations grew by 22.3 percent compared to levels in 2009, reaching 26.5 trillion yen ($339.3 billion), according to the Japan External Trade Organization.
