EWC Presenter: Free HTML5 Tool Lets You Create Great ... - Noupe

Aug 05 2013

Say farewell to Powerpoint, Flash or whatever tool you are currently using to create presentation slides, banner ads, infographics or product demos. EWC Presenter by HindSite Interactive is a powerful, web-based HTML5 editor that does not want any less than change the way you create professional content. The folks at HindSite say they are on a mission and you better believe them?

ewcpresenter-start

Who?s behind EWC? Easy WebContent by HindSite

Easy WebContent is an effort by internet consulting company HindSite Interactive Inc. HindSite started out in 2001 to deliver custom web solutions to businesses and organizations. Already in 2004 they created the brand "Easy WebContent".

The vision behind Easy WebContent was and still is to make it easier to create professional web content using a real WYSIWYG approach. WYSIWYG nowadays is not a new idea, yet back in 2004 Easy WebContent were to be named pioneers.

Throughout the years Easy WebContent?s product portfolio grew to the three main tools we see today. They offer Site Builder, which is a tool to build your own website from scratch. For those, who already have a website, they offer HTML Editor, which is a tool to edit existing web content, regardless of its hosting location, think of it as a cloud-based Dreamweaver. On top of these two tools, Easy WebContent built a row of add-ons, such as a photo gallery or a calender.

Site Builder and HTML Editor come at a price, yet are quite affordable compared to other solutions.

Today we are not going to focus on these two solutions, though. What I?ll be showing you now, is the latest addition to their portfolio, number three in the product triple I mentioned before:

EWC Presenter: Who needs Flash, when we got HTML5?

The Presenter, a cloud-based tool for creating banner ads, presentation slides, infographics and product demos, has just undergone significant changes in usability and design. Presenter is a straight-forward tool for clearly defined purposes. At the time of this writing, Presenter can be used free of charge. Expect that to change, once the beta period ends, though there is no hint as to pricing. As Easy WebContent encourages you to "Try it for free, no credit card needed", it doesn?t seem far-fetched to assume a monetization strategy behind the product.

I reached out to Easy WebContent to get a little more information on that matter. Here?s what founder Payman Taei told me:

We will launch new features that are not available yet for Premium which will include but not be limited to:

  • ability to download HTML5 published file, ?
  • more Custom Assets,
  • advanced features for further customization of elements,
  • additional special effects beyond what is available in free version,
  • and the ability to have a higher number of restore points and number of projects (free allows up to 10)

ewcpresenter-grf-landing

The functionality for creating product demos is not yet implemented, but what Presenter got in store to build banner ads and presentations is impressive enough. Most notably, Presenter does not expect you to be a pro in creating professional content. The tool is dead-simple and almost intuitive to use. Powerpoint or Keynote, for the Mac addicts, are complicated compared to Presenter.

Infographics can be created, too. I was having issues, though. The template did not work and the "Publish" feature didn?t work either. I reported the error to Easy WebContent, where it could not be replicated. So, chances are, you will find the Infographics feature working, although it did not for me?

ewc-to-slideshare

It is obvious that presentation slides were the initial use case Presenter got invented for. The tool-set around presentations is the most elaborate inside the app. You can use preset effects, fine-tune your own, and even animate parts of your presentation. Exporting your presentation can be done through SlideShare, the YouTube for slides or as a download in the form of JPG (individual slides) or PDF (whole presentation).

If you have ever worked with Powerpoint or Keynote, you can?t get lost. If you build your very first presentation with Presenter and have never worked with any other software before, you can?t get lost either. Presenter initially follows a step by step approach. You define what kind of content you want to create, then in a second step choose a template to start with.

ewc-whatwouldyouliketocreate

ewc-choosetheme

After you preset that you want to ? say ? create a presentation with theme "Road" you are taken to the editor.

EWC Presenter: The Editor is just Great

ewcpresenter-editor

The editor reminds me of an iPad app, which is a good thing in my perception. It has a clean and modern design. Navigation is built from left to right, where the main items are located to the left and the detailed work area, called the "Stage" spreads out to the right. In between you?ll find an area to customize tools, grids, texts, whatever is customizable.

ewcpresenter-editor-closer

The editor is the heart of the app. From here you can create, manipulate, throw away, start anew and lastly publish your content. Presenter?s editor sports a drag & drop interface that actually works reliably. Building presentations is easy, helpers are available at your fingertips ? if you want them. Even my favorite helper in WYSIWYG design "snap to grid" is present, and comes with a grid that can be customized pixel-wise from 0 to 100 pixels squared or not.

ewcpresenter-view

The latest update saw Easy WebContent integrate loads of vector shapes into Presenter. You can choose from a wide variety of icons, banners or ribbons, all of which can be used freely in the works you create, without having to worry about licensing. Even a free image library is integrated. Flickr Creative Commons is available from inside Presenter, too. With such a massive back-log of free, reusable content, Presenter provides one of the most powerful creative platforms for your next presentation that I have ever heard of.

ewcpresenter-add-media

What convinces me most is, that behind the scenes of Presenter we see plain HTML5 at work. There are no proprietary technologies such as Flash, that would limit you or your customers. Content created using Presenter can be viewed on desktop and mobile clients alike, without the need for browser plugins or system extensions.

EWC Presenter: Outlook

As I mentioned before, EWC Presenter has just undergone some major changes, making it faster, better-looking and more capable. Yet, the new content formats infographics and product demo are not available right now. Especially the availability of infographics templates might bring the breakthrough for the product. At the moment they seem not be designed as interactive infographics, so I would expect them to be downloadable as JPGs only. But anyway, that?s great enough.

The addition of the product demo feature will let us see how clean and compliant the code will be, that Presenter is about to create. I would expect paid plans to be introduced together with that feature, too. Stay on top of things by subscribing to their blog.

Let?s draw a conclusion. Presenter is a free tool allowing for the professional creation of animated presentations and banner-ads. It does not rely on proprietary technology and runs inside any modern browser. You will definitely save time if you decide to leave your Powerpoint/Keynote aside. Presenter is one of the most user-friendly and capable cloud-apps I have ever happened to have the chance to get my hands on.

Skin cancer may develop during laser removal of tattoo

(HealthDay)?Malignant melanoma may develop on a preexisting nevus within a tattoo that is being removed with laser therapy, according to a case report published online July 31 in JAMA Dermatology.

Laura Pohl, M.D., of Laserklinik Karlsruhe in Germany, and colleagues describe the first case of a malignant melanoma that formed on a preexisting nevus within a tattoo during and between phases of removal with laser therapy.

The researchers found a suspicious nevus on the right shoulder of a 29-year-old male during laser removal of large, multicolored tattoos on both arms and the chest. Initially, the patient refused to allow excision of the nevus. When continued laser treatment was made conditional upon removal of the nevus, the patient consented. Biopsy results showed the lesion was a superficial spreading malignant melanoma.

"In general, tattoos should never be placed on pigmented lesions; if they are, the tattoos should not be treated by laser," the authors write.

FDA links stomach bug in 2 states to Mexican farm

Cyclospora is a rare parasite that causes a lengthy gastrointestinal illness. (AP Photo/Centerd for Disease Control and Prevention)

Graphic identifies the states where cases of cyclospora infection have been reported to the CDC; 1c x 6 inches; 46.5 mm x 152 mm;

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration says an outbreak of stomach illnesses in Iowa and Nebraska is linked to salad mix served at local Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants and supplied by a Mexican farm.

The outbreak of cyclospora infections has sickened more than 400 people in 16 states in all. The agency says it is still working to determine whether the salad mix is the source of illnesses in the other 14 states.

"It is not yet clear whether the cases reported from other states are all part of the same outbreak," the agency said in a statement. "The investigation of increased cases of cyclosporiasis in other states continues."

Both Olive Garden and Red Lobster are owned by Orlando-based Darden Restaurants. In a statement, Darden spokesman Mike Bernstein said the FDA's announcement is "new information."

"Nothing we have seen prior to this announcement gave us any reason to be concerned about the products we've received from this supplier," Bernstein said.

The FDA said it traced illnesses from the restaurants in Nebraska and Iowa to Taylor Farms de Mexico, the Mexican branch of Salinas, Calif.-based Taylor Farms. The company, which provides produce to the food service industry, said its facility located about 180 miles north of Mexico City in San Miguel de Allende is the only one of its 12 sites to be connected to the cases.

In an email, the chairman and CEO of Taylor Farms, Bruce Taylor, said the Mexican plant produced 48 million servings of salads for thousands of restaurants in the Midwest and eastern U.S. in June, the month the outbreak started. He said the facility has an extensive water testing program.

"All our tests have been negative and we have no evidence of cyclospora in our product," Taylor said. "We are working closely with the FDA to continue this investigation."

Taylor said Taylor Farms de Mexico does not supply Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants in Texas, the state with the second most illnesses in the outbreak. According to CDC, 113 of the illnesses reported so far were in Texas. Iowa has had 146 illnesses and Nebraska 81.

In an additional statement on the company's website, Taylor Farms says the Mexican facility is "state of the art and has an exceptional food safety record." The statement said the product is out of the food supply.

The FDA said it had audited the Mexican processing facility in 2011 and found "no notable issues," according to the agency. The agency said it would increase surveillance efforts for green leafy products imported from Mexico.

The most recent known illness in the two states linked to the infected salad was in Nebraska a month ago. The typical shelf life for a salad mix is up to 14 days.

There have been more recent illnesses in other states. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most recent illness was July 23 but centers did not specify a location.

The agency said its investigation has not implicated any packaged salad sold in grocery stores.

Man who threatened to kill President Obama sentenced

A Melbourne man was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for threatening to kill President Barack Obama on Facebook.

Christopher Castillo, 28, was convicted by a jury in February.

According to testimony and evidence presented during trial, Castillo posted a threat on Facebook right before last year?s election.

He wrote that he would hunt Obama down and kill him.

He was apparently angry about the president?s views on health care.

During his trial, Castillo testified that he was just angry, and didn't really mean that he would kill the president.

'Sharknado' mania hits theaters: midnight screenings sell out, more shows added

By Tony Maglio

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - SyFy's original movie "Sharknado" is in select Regal cinemas Friday for a one-night only screening. So far, ticket sales have been a whirlwind - without sharks.

"Advance ticket sales are bloody good," Harry Medved, spokesperson for movie ticketing service Fandango, told TheWrap. "It's unprecedented for a TV movie to be re-released in theaters and do this well in limited engagements - but then again, cult movies are more fun to watch with a packed audience yelling their favorite lines back at the big screen. "

He added, "You need full audience participation to truly appreciate a film like 'Sharknado.'"

In New York City - the site of "Sharknado's" eventual sequel, two sold-out midnight showtimes at the Regal Union Square Stadium 14 have led to the theater adding a third midnight showtime to meet fan demand.

In Boston at the Regal Fenway Stadium 13 & RPX a sold-out midnight showtime led the theater to add a second midnight show. Same thing at the Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX in Seattle.

In Los Angeles, where the red carpet will be rolled out for the cast and crew, the midnight showing at Regal L.A. Live Stadium 14 is nearly sold-out.

Dallas's UA Galaxy Theatre Stadium 10 is nearly out of tickets for its midnight showing as well.

5 Incredible Internet Marketing Strategies Profitable Businesses Use ...

How to earn more Online with Affiliate marketing online

by: Jeff Schuman

Approaching your Internet business with an attitude for long term success requires you to implement certain strategies. Running a profitable online business is something anyone can do if they stay focused on the right things.

In this article we will go over 5 Internet marketing strategies that profitable online business owners use.

1. Build a comprehensive keyword list. Getting on page 1 for targeted keyword phrases is extremely important. Being in the top 10 for as many keyword phrases as possible on a search engine such as Google can bring you unbelievable long-term traffic.

This all starts with knowing what keyword phrases people are searching for relating to the theme of your business. Initially you may want to start with keywords that are not searched as many times as the most competitive phrases.

However for long-term success you want to rank for every possible keyword phrase you can. This means using a free keyword tool such as Google offers, as well as using more comprehensive keywortd research tools.

2. Add fresh content to your website using a blog. The more fresh content you add the more search engines will fall in love with your Internet business.

The number of repeat visitors you get back to your website will increase as you add fresh content. This is something you can do yourself or you can outsource to a Internet marketing company.

3. Be unique in the content you had. Quality content that is different than your visitors are finding on other websites will give you an edge over your competitors.

Add relevant content to the theme of your business. Then stay current with what's going on in your industry and add quality content based on that.

4. Make your website user friendly. The easier it is for your visitors to get around in it the better your results will be. Make your website easy to navigate and set it up with your website visitors in mind.

5. Build one way backlinks for long term traffic. Getting your website address on as many other websites as possible is extremely important. One way back links from quality web pages increase the value of your own site in the eyes of the search engines.

They also make it easier for people to find your site. Use strategies such as article marketing, blog marketing, and video marketing to increase the number of one way back links you have.

Use submission software or services to speed up the process. Think big in terms of how many articles and videos you are getting online. Many Internet marketers underestimate how large the world wide web is and how competitive their own niche is.

Follow these 5 Internet marketing strategies for long-term profitable online business success. Internet marketing can be a lot of fun, but there is definitely hard work involved as well

'Parenthood' cast addresses NBC support at TCA

This image released by NBC shows Craig T. Nelson from the "Parenthood" session during the NBCUniversal Press Tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday, July 27, 2013. (AP Photo/NBC, Chris Haston)

(AP) ? It got a little awkward during NBC's "Parenthood" panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour when Craig T. Nelson was asked about whether he regrets making recent comments about the network not supporting the show.

Last March, Nelson was quoted as saying NBC was "out of it" and didn't do enough to promote the series.

On Saturday Nelson said, "You get associated with a show that you love and a show that you believe in and a cast that's just extraordinary and you get frustrated with the fact that it doesn't seem to be honored the way that you feel it should be... I've been doing like 18 years of series television and I haven't been associated with a show...this wonderful."

Nelson went on to say he was "proud" of speaking out.

Executive Producer Jason Katims countered the comments saying, "The fact that we're sitting here on a panel going into a fifth season is indicative of the passion the network does feel for the show."

At this point Monica Potter mouthed "I'm so uncomfortable!"

Earlier, chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt, called "Parenthood" one of its "great, quality shows" and expressed frustration that the show doesn't get more acclaim.

"It doesn't get the Emmy nominations. It doesn't get the accolades. It's one of the best shows on television, and I wish it had more of that acclaim."

The network has picked up "Parenthood" for 22 episodes for its fifth season. The last time it had a full order was the show's second season. It will air on Thursdays with "The Michael J. Fox Show" and "Sean Saves the World" starring Sean Hayes.

"Parenthood" follows a large family living in the San Francisco area with all of its ups-and-downs. It also stars Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Dax Shepard and Erika Christensen.

It premieres Sept. 26 at 10p.m. EDT.

Feds target University of Colorado for handling of sexual assault case

By Adrian D. Garcia
The Denver Post

(Joe Amon, Denver Post file photo)

The University of Colorado Boulder reported it is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights over its handling of an alleged sexual assault involving a student.

The university first became aware of the federal inquiry on June 21, CU Boulder spokesman Bronson Hilliard said. The CU-Boulder chancellor's office sent an internal memo to the student body, faculty and staff on Wednesday afternoon.

"You have to be very careful in announcing an investigation," Hilliard said. "You want to make sure you have all the details correct about what the precise focus of the investigation is."

The internal memo from Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano acknowledged the actions the Office of Civil Rights is undertaking but said it couldn't provide any details about the case.

DiStefano said that he has ordered an external review of the university's Title IX compliance efforts to make sure its procedures dealing with sexual misconduct meet guidelines. Since 1972, Title IX has regulated gender-based discrimination - including sexual assault and harassment -- in education settings.

Sarah Gilchriese, a 20-year-old communications major at CU Boulder, said in a phone interview she filed the complaint with the OCR because she was unhappy with the way the university handled her case.

Gilchriese said she was sexually assault by another student off-campus during the middle of February. She reported the assault to CU-Boulder's Office of Student Conduct around March 3.

The student conduct office undertook an investigation and suspended the alleged assailant from school for eight months, fined him $75 and assigned him to write a paper reflecting on the incident. The university took nearly a month, Gilchriese said, to have her assailant removed from the campus.

"He was going to be allowed back on campus when I'm still a student and that's wrong," Gilchriese said.

She said she hired a lawyer and went to court to get a protection order so he could not return.

"I want (CU) to amend their policies to protect the victims," Gilchriese said. "I didn't ask for this to happen to me."

Gilchriese said she filed a police report. The alleged assailant has not been charged with a crime.

The Post does not typically identify the victims of sexual crimes, but Gilchriese chose to be identified.

CU-Boulder is standing by its record of Title IX compliance, Hilliard said. He said the external review ordered by DiStefano is designed to make sure the university is in full compliance with Title IX.

In 2007, the university settled two claims filed under Title IX, paying female students who were sexually assaulted by football players and high-school recruits at a 2001 party a total of $2.8 million and agreeing to add staff to help CU prevent sexual harassment and misconduct.

Hilliard said the university enacted a series of reforms as a result of the settlement and since then has "basically been in rolling review to make sure we are in compliance with Title IX."

Royal Baby Scams Could Lead to Royal Headaches

Whenever there's a big news story, scammers and cyberthieves are quick to take advantage of Internet users' curiosity in order to plant malware on their computers and steal sensitive personal information.

The baby boy born yesterday (July 22) to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ? aka Prince William and the former Kate Middleton ? is probably no exception.

So be very careful if you're Googling for news about the royal tot or for terms such as "royal baby photos" or "Princess Kate."

Online criminals carry out search engine poisoning to turn news-seekers into victims, using marketing techniques to boost phony links to supposedly exclusive items up to the top of Web search results.

But instead of being taken to real news or photos, victims often end up on corrupted or deliberately phony sites that can infect their computers.

Scammers do similar things with videos. Promises of "leaked" footage are common, but there's often a catch: You'll be asked to allow video-player "installers" or "updates" to be installed.

As of this writing, there are no legitimate images or videos of the infant prince on the Internet, so any links that purport to have them could be attempting to harm you.

Criminals also prey on celebrity news junkies in the form of phishing emails that promise "exclusive" information about a breaking story.

For example, the royal family has revealed the new prince's birth weight, but that's about all anybody knows so far. The public is clamoring to know the little guy's name, eye color and any other tiny detail.

Scammers feed off this hunger and may try to get the better of nosy news hounds by emailing to victims messages that claim to have links to secret details about the royal baby.

But the recipient will first have to take a survey, log in to Facebook (beware of fake login pages) or provide his name, address and credit-card number.

To avoid falling for attacks such as these, use good anti-virus software and pay attention where online links actually lead. (Don't click on any links in email messages you're not expecting.) If it looks suspicious, don't click on it.

Stick to major and trusted news sites. If anyone is going to have the latest scoop, it's probably not going to be confined to an obscure and fishy-looking website.

There are no reports of royal baby scams yet, but they're sure to come. Online criminals have had months to prepare for Kate and Will's big day.

"Sadly, it's almost inevitable," British security expert Graham Cluley wrote on Twitter about royal-baby scams. "It is going to be such a huge news story, the bad guys will jump on the bandwagon."

Netflix, Pandora confirmed as content partners for Chromecast streaming

Netflix, Pandora confirmed as content partners for Chromecast streaming

Google's taking another big stab at the TV market with its just-announced Chromecast HDMI streaming solution, and it's naturally lined up some content partners to make that device more useful. At its event today, the company confirmed that Netflix is on board with video streaming support from its Android and iOS apps; Chromecast buyers will also get three months of Netflix for free "for a limited time" with their purchase (notably, that includes existing Netflix members). On the audio side of things, you'll also be able to take advantage of music streaming courtesy of Pandora, which is apparently coming sometime after launch according to Google's blog post. Less surprisingly, YouTube, Google Play Movies & TV, and the Play Music app will also be offering full support for the device, letting you push videos and music to your TV (and the sound system attached to it) from your mobile device of choice. Additional content partners are said to be "coming soon."

5 Things Every Undergraduate Should Know about Employment ...

Unemployment remains a huge problem in Nigeria. Every year Nigerian universities continue to churn out thousands of new graduates with freshly minted diplomas who join a competitive job market with bleak employment prospects. If you are among the 25 percent of unemployed Nigerians or perhaps one of the approximately 45 percent of working age Nigerians who have given up hopes of finding a job in a job market that seems to be tilted in favor of the connected and returnees with shiny diplomas, questionable accents, and exotic work experiences from abroad, here are five things you should know:

Think Global
Now is not the time to begrudge the rich and fortunate who can afford to travel abroad for work and educational purposes. Just because you come from a poor or middle class socioeconomic background does not preclude you from opportunities abroad. In today?s hyper connected global landscape, what you know is more important than where you come from or your socioeconomic background. Take advantage of globalization and develop a global mindset.

A global mindset in the employment context is about developing your skills and applying them wherever they are needed around the world. For example, are you an unemployed Political Science and policy graduate who grew up in the North and who have mastered the cultural factors and dynamics that influence behavior and day to day living in the North? While a bank or oil company in Victoria Island may not necessarily value this in you, your perspective may be invaluable to an International Development agency somewhere around the world that is focused on resolving the conflict in Northern Nigeria and other African countries undergoing similar challenges as the North.

Similarly, are you fluent in Arabic? As a bilingual Nigerian, your English and Arabic skills maybe highly appreciated by a U.S. contractor in the United States or the Middle East. There are many instances where the skills we take for granted in Nigeria are actually appreciated around the world. Rather than sinking deeper into the pool of unemployment in Nigeria, broaden your horizons by thinking about how your skills may be applied beyond the shores of Nigeria. Think about teaching English in countries with emerging economies, such as Brazil and China. Most of these English teaching jobs will usually have a preference for people from the United States, the UK, Canada, and Australia; however once you can demonstrate that you know English just as well, you also have a fair shot at these jobs. Apply for fellowships and programs such as the Atlas Corps, which provides work opportunities in the United States to individuals from around the world. Take advantage of the aging populations in many countries and apply for skilled jobs in these countries. Some countries with aging populations are seeking qualified people to join their workforce and pay taxes.

Update Your Skills and Competencies
Just because you are unemployed is not a reason to set your alarm clock to 10:00am every morning. You have to do what you can to improve your chances of landing your next employment opportunity. And updating your skills set does just that. If there is any benefit to being unemployed, it is the time it allows you to do things you may otherwise not have time to do when you have a job. Now is the time to get that professional certification you have been putting off, return to school for a graduate degree or certificate program, and learn skills that will distinguish you from other job applicants.

Learn to Tell Your Story
An engaging C.V or resume and clear cover letter is the key.A common mistake most job applicants make is to underestimate the power of a good CV and cover letter. Your CV and cover letter is your ticket to landing an interview and a potential job. It also represents your brand. The secret to writing a powerful CV and cover letter that would make recruiters remember you, even after reading hundreds of other CVs and cover letters, is to think about your brand and the value it represents. Don?t just list all your past places of employment and job description or few assignments and chores you did there. Instead, write about how whatever you did added value to the organization. Remember that you don?t need to have had the fanciest title or position. It all depends on how you sell it on your CV and cover letter. When writing your CV and cover letter, establish a clear link between whatever you did and the bottom line of the business. Show your impact.

Consider an example of a secretary whose only responsibility was to pick up coffee for a physician in private practice. Although her tasks may seem menial, such a secretary can show her value on her CV by explaining how the coffee she sourced enabled the physician to stay alert and perform more than two surgeries a day. And by performing more than two surgeries a day the organization brought in X amount of money. She can also explain that by bringing in coffee every day, she enabled the physician to concentrate fully on patients, provide the best patient care, and increase patients? satisfaction. In this example, the secretary has shown how her role contributed to the bottom line.

Think Outside the 9-to-5 Box
Don?t be ashamed of unprofessional jobs. At one point or another, we have all been guilty of tying our self-esteem to our jobs. And so when we suddenly find ourselves unemployed without a traditional 9-to-5 professional job, our self-esteem plunges, and then we vigorously look for another 9-to-5 job. Our society has typically regarded bankers, doctors, lawyers, telecommunication workers, and oil company employees with a lot more respect than individuals in other professions. But here?s the deal: there is a lot of value and learning opportunities that can be gleaned from nonprofessional jobs that can help you get your next professional job. The financial rewards and respect may be minimal, but your professional growth would be enormous. For instance, by selling goods as little as recharge cards and even pure water, a person can learn highly valuable and sought-after skills such as customer service, interpersonal skills, and supply-chain management. Moreover, the experience provides good information and answers for behavioral interviews in which recruiters ask for specific life examples or situations of when you exhibited certain skills and capabilities. Again, it all depends on how well you are able to articulate these skills on your CV. and cover letter, and how you can translate the lessons learned from a nonprofessional job into a professional situation.

Volunteer and Make a Difference in Your Community
Volunteering helps to keep the mind engaged and it can be a potential differentiator between job candidates. When a recruiter is presented with two identical job candidates, the person who has volunteered and made a difference would be preferred over the person who remained idle and done nothing since being unemployed. Volunteering can also help you shake off the self-pity, shame, and laziness that unemployment sometimes forces upon people. Rather than eating Nkwobi, drinking stout, and complaining to friends about how hard it is to find a job in Nigeria, get up and start making a difference in your community. Something as little as cleaning your street can snowball into a nonprofit or nongovernmental organization. Don?t underestimate what you can achieve simply by getting started.

So there you have it. These five tips should get you moving towards your next opportunity.

Crews remove damaged jet after hard landing at LaGuardia

The Southwest plane that skidded down the runway at LaGuardia Airport on Monday caused significant damage to the aircraft, but only 10 passengers walked away with minor injuries. NBC's Katy Tur reports.

By M. Alex Johnson, Staff Writer, NBC News

New York's LaGuardia Airport was fully reopened Tuesday after a disabled Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 skidded to a hard landing Monday evening as its front landing gear collapsed, authorities said.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said crews with cranes lifted the jet from the runway onto a flatbed truck. Officials said Tuesday morning that the runway had been reopened.

Of the 150?customers and crew?on board the flight from Nashville, Tenn., three passengers, the two pilots and three flight attendants were treated and released from the hospital, Southwest Airlines said Tuesday.

The National Transportation Safety Board said there was substantial damage to the aircraft and announced an investigation.

"The NTSB is doing what they call a preliminary investigation,? Southwest Vice President Linda Rutherford told NBC 5 of Dallas, where the airline has its headquarters. "That involves a review of the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder."

Bryan and Callista Foster were passengers on Southwest 345 when the nose gear collapsed during a landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Bryan Foster had is camera rolling and caught the moment when the plane hit the runway.

Rutherford said investigators were also interviewing the pilots.?

The jet came to a stop Monday on Runway 4 at 5:45 p.m. ET, said Thomas Bosco, the airport's general manager and acting aviation director for the Port Authority. Four others refused treatment, he said.

The airport, which was closed after the accident, was reopened at 7 p.m. ET, Bosco said.

There was still no explanation for why the landing gear malfunctioned. The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday night that the pilots "reported possible front landing gear issues before landing," but it gave no further details.

About a dozen emergency vehicles surrounded the Southwest plane, whose passengers evacuated by the rear chute and were taken by bus to the terminal. Bosco said none of the injuries occurred during the evacuation.

"It's a surreal scene here given what just happened in the Bay Area," Sam Brock of NBC Bay Area, who saw the incident from another plane he was on at the airport, told?NBC New York in an on-air telephone interview, referring to the crash of Asiana Flight 214 early this month at San Francisco International Airport.

Brock said the pilot of his flight told passengers that there were no serious injuries and no sign of fire or flames on the Southwest plane.

Steve Czech, who was on the runway waiting for his American Airlines flight to take off, told NBC New York that he saw the Southwest plane touch down.

"There was just this fireball going down the runway. It was unbelievable ? it was probably 300 yards from us, if that," Czech said.

"Clearly, there was no nose gear," he said. "It was just screeching down the runway, fire on both sides. There was debris kind of rolling off to the sides."

John Blackman and Kip Whitlock of NBC News contributed to this report.

Wheelchair-bound Florida man catches 250-pound shark

VILANO BEACH, Fla. -

A wheelchair-bound man with no legs is celebrating after catching an 8 foot, 250-pound shark off the North Fla. coast.

The St. Augustine Record reports that Matt Sechrist, a 19-year-old student from Clay County, reeled in the lemon shark while sitting in his wheelchair on Vilano Beach.

A family friend dropped bait off the coast, then Sechrist put the brakes on his wheelchair and strapped on a fighting harness.

Friends and family members held the chair in place while Sechrist struggled to catch the shark.

After an hour, the shark tired and Sechrist reeled it in. The group took photos, revived the shark and released it into the ocean.

Sechrist starts college this week to pursue a major in human performance, so he can train other wheelchair-bound athletes.

Is Yahoo Stock Deal Insider Trading? - Business Insider

Some startling news from Yahoo this morning...

The company is buying $1.1 billion worth of its stock from its largest investor, Third Point, and three of the company's most important directors--including Third Point's Dan Loeb--are quitting?the board.

This is big news for Yahoo! from a fundamental perspective. The three board members who are resigning, activist investor Dan Loeb, media consultant Michael Wolf, and turnaround expert Harry Wilson, have made a major contribution to Yahoo's turnaround and stock price resurrection over the past two years.

This also seems like big news from another perspective:

It seems like the very definition of insider trading.

How?

Well, sometime prior to the open of the stock market this morning, three of Yahoo's most important board members decided to resign.

And, sometime prior to the open of the stock this morning--before the board-member resignations were made public--Yahoo's largest shareholder, which knew about the resignations, dumped $1.1 billion of stock.

The information that three important board members are quitting is highly material information--information that almost any reasonable investor would want to know when considering a Yahoo trade. Trading while in possession of material non-public information, meanwhile, is insider trading.

Given that Yahoo's three most important board members just quit, it's not surprising to see Yahoo's stock down 5% this morning. It's actually surprising to me that it's not down more than that.

Third Point and Yahoo obviously knew that three of Yahoo's board members were about to quit when they agreed to the terms of the deal in which Yahoo will buy 40 million shares of its stock from Third Point.

Third Point and Yahoo, however, did not wait to agree on a price for this trade until after the news about the board member resignations had been made public.?

Third Point and Yahoo did not, for example, wait until the close of trading today, when Yahoo's stock price will presumably reflect the market's assessment of the news that Yahoo's three most important board members have just quit.

Instead, Yahoo and Third Point priced their transaction based on Yahoo's closing price on Friday--before the news about the directors quitting was made public.

So Third Point is getting the pre-resignation price for its stock, while knowing about the upcoming board member resignations. And the rest of us Joe Schmo Yahoo shareholders, who didn't know about the resignations, are now getting the post-resignation price.

Again, the definition of "insider trading" is trading while in possession of material non-public information.

It would be extremely hard to argue that the sudden and unexpected resignation of three of Yahoo's most important directors is not material non-public information.

And it would be impossible to argue that Third Point and Yahoo did not trade while in possession of this information.

So, how is this not insider trading?

I don't mean to be dense or rude here. ?And I'm also not a lawyer. So maybe there's some exception to insider trading laws that allows insider deals like this to happen.

To be clear, I'm also not objecting to big private block trades. Those happen all the time. (In most cases, though, they happen at a discount to the prevailing market price, to account for the likely impact of that amount of stock changing hands on the market price. This one, I note, did not happen at a discount.)

And, very importantly, these big private block trades also do not happen when both parties--and no one else--are in possession of?highly material non-public information, such as the resignation of three key directors.

I am sure that this deal was lawyered out the wazoo. So I'm sure there's some innocent explanation.

But until I hear that explanation, I will be scratching my head.

A source familiar with Third Point's view of this trade says that it was legal because the stock was sold to Yahoo, not the public. Yahoo was in possession of the same information as Third Point, the source says, so there was no information on one side that was not known to the other side.

And I certainly see that.

As a Yahoo shareholder, I'm a bit annoyed that Yahoo didn't insist on getting a modest discount to the trading price in exchange for buying such a big block of stock, as I would have expected in this scenario. But I'm not arguing that Yahoo got shafted by being sold stock while not being in possession of the information on the other side of the trade.

The folks I'm frustrated on behalf of are Yahoo's other shareholders, who didn't sell, and who didn't know about this material non-public information that both Yahoo and Third Point knew about when they traded at that juicy $29+ price on Friday.

A a Yahoo shareholder who was/is thinking of selling his stock, for example, I can tell you that I sure would have liked to have known on Friday afternoon that Yahoo's three most important board members were about to announce that they were quitting. That information might have made a difference to me when I was considering selling my stock (which, as it happened, I actually was doing on Friday afternoon. I didn't sell.) And I certainly feel like a bit of a sucker this morning, now that I have learned that Yahoo's smartest shareholder, Dan Loeb, unloaded $1.1 billion of his stock on Friday, while knowing what I was I blissfully clueless about all weekend.

DISCLAIMER: I am absurdly conflicted here. First, I'm a Yahoo shareholder. For better and worse, I've owned the stock since 1998. (I have been thinking of selling it recently, in part because I'm sick of having to explain that I'm a Yahoo shareholder when I write or talk about the company. It looks like Friday might have been a good time to sell.) Second, I work for Yahoo: I'm a host of a Yahoo Finance video show called Daily Ticker. Third, I have friends and acquaintances at several companies involved in this transaction and many more companies that might have been involved. Basically, I have so many conflicts and potential conflicts with respect to this story that I could spend the rest of the day describing them....

Imogen Heap: Hide And Seek

I've always liked this song. It's made of layered voice tracks all sung by Imogen Heap and backed up with some keyboard synth shenanigans. Of course, we all remember it for the bridge aka the "mmm watcha say" portion, which was apparently featured prominently in the climactic scene of The OC series finale. I wouldn't know because I never watched The OC, except that then SNL made a hilarious Digital Short spoofing The OC and prominently featuring some "mmm watcha say"s. Good stuff.
