Hioki less than stellar in UFC debut win over Roop, Jorgensen gets by Curran too at UFC 137

Hioki less than stellar in UFC debut win over Roop, Jorgensen gets by Curran too at UFC 137

LAS VEGAS - Hatsu Hioki was fighting for more than just himself tonight at UFC 137. He was dealing with the pressure of having Japanese MMA's reputation to protect. It wasn't the greatest performance tonight, but Hioki did enough to take a split decision win, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, over UFC veteran George Roop.

Hioki, ranked by some as high as No. 2 in the world at 145 pounds, was trying to snap a real dry spell from the top fighters from Japan, who have struggled in the U.S. recently.

Following the narrow victory, Hioki told UFC analyst Joe Rogan and the crowd, "Japanese MMA is not dead. It's time to change things."

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]

The 28-year-old entered this one as a minus-450 favorite. He looked composed, but not explosive. His best round came in the second when he scored a takedown with 3:27 left.

Hioki quickly converted it to the mount. But once in the mount, he looked he had trouble picking an attack. That, and Roop did a nice job from the bottom of staying active.

Roop clearly took the third round. He was the fresher fighter and scored a takedown late.
For now, Hioki's victory halts that terrible trend from the elite Japanese fighters in the UFC.

Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole pointed out earlier this week that the best of the best (Yoshihiro Akiyama, Michihiro Omigawa, Kid Yamamoto, Takeyu Mizugaki and Takanori Gomi) from Japan had posted a win percentage around 85 percent outside the UFC only to see it drop to 35.8 percent in the promotion.

It's only one fight, and often times fighters deal with UFC jitters in their first trip to the Octagon. Hioki (25-4) should be a factor in the promotion's featherweight division.

Jorgenson's takedowns the difference in close fight against Curran

Jeff Curran is one the old dogs of mixed martials arts and showed tonight he can still be a factor at the highest levels. He gave Scott Jorgenson, a top seven fighter at bantamweight in the UFC, a run for his money but lost via unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Curran (33-14, 0-2 UFC) last fought in the UFC way back in 2004 and that was at 155 pounds against Matt Serra.

Jorgenson was simply better wrestler tonight. The former Boise State wrestler scored six takedowns in all. He didn't do much damage from the top, but controlled the fight enough to win over the judges.

The Search for Alien 'Footprints': Scientist Rethinks Hunt for E.T. (SPACE.com)

Any intelligent extraterrestrial life that exists probably won't announce itself by blowing up the White House, or win over the hearts of children as a lovable alien with a glowing finger. Many scientists simply hope to find evidence of them by scanning the skies for a radio signal from a distant star's alien civilization. But such efforts may also risk overlooking clues of past alien activity right here on Earth.

If aliens did leave their mark on Earth by some wild chance, we could search for the possible "footprints" of alien technology or even analyze the DNA of terrestrial organisms for signs of intelligent messages or tinkering. Such a CSI-style forensics search could complement, rather than replace, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) astronomers who continue to look skyward, said Paul Davies, a physicist and cosmologist at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.

"My proposals aim to spread the burden from a small band of heroic radio astronomers to the entire scientific community," Davies said. "Projects like genomic SETI are an attempt to complement radio SETI, not undermine it."

Davies wants scientists to broaden their thinking about how aliens could have left behind their mark. Having worked with SETI for three decades, he has written about his ideas in a book, "The Eerie Silence" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010) and articles such as one that appeared in the online August edition of the journal Acta Astronautica. [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]

But Davies does not think such intelligent alien life must necessarily exist. And his many years of supporting SETI have not stopped him from describing the needle-in-a-haystack search as "a search without any clue as to whether there is a needle there at all, or how large the haystack may be."

?

Alien signposts

To their credit, SETI astronomers have not ignored the possibilities beyond extraterrestrials deliberately beaming a message straight at Earth. Suggestions over the past 50 years include?extraterrestrial radio traffic?that happens to pass by, or a powerful radio or optical beacon that sweeps the Milky Way galaxy like a lighthouse.

A very advanced alien civilization might have built huge astro-engineering projects called Dyson spheres to directly tap the power of stars. By putting a shell of material around a host star, aliens would not only trap much of the star's heat, but also create a unique infrared signature that Earth astronomers could detect.

Just as Earth sends out robotic explorers, an alien civilization could have left behind dormant probes at strategic locations such as in the asteroid belt. Earth astronomers could try searching for such probes or even beaming "hello" radio messages to suspected locations in an attempt to "wake up" the probes.

Left behind

There's also a chance that past visits to Earth by intelligent aliens left signs much closer to home. But probability and the length of the universe's age suggest that any such alien visit would have taken place before humans ever emerged on Earth, Davies said.

That means any traces of an alien visitationwould have had to survive for hundreds of millions or billions of years for humans to still find them today.

"If there is another form of life on Earth, we could find it within 20 years, if we take the trouble to look," Davies told Astrobiology Magazine. "Of course, it may not be there, but searching our own planet is far easier than searching another one."

Non-human deposits of nuclear waste consisting of plutonium would point to artificial origins, because natural deposits would have long since decayed, Davies said. Scars of mining or quarrying could remain buried beneath the Earth or on its moon.

Alien "messages in a bottle" or artifacts similar to the monoliths of "2001: A Space Odyssey" would seem less likely to survive for hundreds of millions of years on Earth because of geological and weather forces.

Shadow life

Perhaps the most fascinating possibility is if aliens used bioengineering to leave behind unintentional or intentional traces or messages in the?DNA of life on Earth. The self-perpetuating nature of life forms could help ensure survival of any such biologically-embedded messages.

Citizen scientists and school students could pitch in to run genomic versions of SETI programsto find any such traces, Davies said. Data-mining software programs could do much of the heavy lifting as just a small part of the usual genomic analyses going on in everyday research.

Alien bioengineering might have also created a "shadow biosphere" of life built upon biochemistry separate from that of Earth life forms. Examples would be life forms that don?t use DNA or proteins, or incorporate different elements in their biochemistry than all other known life forms on Earth do.? Scientists have already begun major efforts to find shadow biospheres, but of natural?rather than artificial origins.

If scientists find "weird" shadow organisms that arose separately from the Earth life forms we know, that won't necessarily suggest intelligent alien involvement. But such a find could give more credibility to the idea that life has a good chance of arising when given the right circumstances, rather than simply being a one-time freak accident, Davies said. And that might make everyone feel a little less alone.

Libya asks UN to hold up lifting no-fly zone

(AP) ? Libya asked the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday to hold up on lifting the no-fly zone it imposed and ending its authorization to protect civilians until the transitional government makes an official request, possibly within days.

The council authorized the actions on March 17 in response to an Arab League request to try to halt Moammar Gadhafi's military which was advancing against rebels and their civilian supporters. The NATO bombing campaign that followed was critical in helping the rebels oust Gadhafi from power in August.

Libya's deputy U.N. ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi told the Security Council the Libyan people look forward to terminating the U.N. mandates as soon as possible, explaining that they "hate any interference" in the country's sovereignty though they know NATO's military campaign was "indispensable" and saved many lives.

Dabbashi said "Oct. 31 is a logical date" but the transitional government needs to evaluate the security situation and the country's ability to monitor its borders.

Russia has proposed that the Security Council adopt a resolution terminating the no-fly zone and authorization of military action to protect civilians. Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said before Wednesday's council meeting that this shouldn't be delayed beyond Oct. 31, but the French and British envoys have cautioned that any actions be coordinated with Libyan authorities when they are ready.

Last week, following Gadhafi's death, NATO announced preliminary plans to phase out its mission on Oct. 31. But the alliance earlier Wednesday unexpectedly postponed a decision, saying NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen needed to continue consultations with the United Nations and Libya's National Transitional Council, which declared the country's "liberation" on Sunday.

NATO aircraft continued air patrols Wednesday and spokeswoman Carmen Romero said the alliance's governing body, the North Atlantic Council, "will meet with partners on Friday to discuss our Libya mission and take a formal decision."

Libya's Dabbashi said the country's air force hasn't been activated, and the interim government has been criticized for delaying the reinstitution of nation's armed forces which are "the only force that can preserve our security and monitor our frontiers as well as protect the security of our citizens."

"Therefore, we wish to inform you not to be hasty in adopting a resolution, and we will inform you of the official decision of the NTC," Dabbashi told council members.

He said Libya expects to establish a new transitional government in the next two weeks and will then start trying to build a prosperous, democratic country that respects human rights. He said this will be difficult because Libya has no institutions ? a result of Gadhafi's more than four-decade dictatorship ? and the country will need U.N. assistance.

Ian Martin, the top U.N. envoy to Libya, told the Security Council that U.N. electoral officials have already met with NTC officials to discuss U.N. support for what will be Libya's first elections for over 45 years within eight months ? to choose a National Congress that will draft a constitution for the country.

Martin again highlighted "the terrible legacy of the extraordinary quantity of weaponry and munitions on which the Gadhafi regime squandered the wealth of Libya, to the benefit only of diverse arms suppliers, and now to the menace of Libya and its region."

He said the U.N. mission is continuing to facilitate coordination among the NTC and international organizations overseeing the control of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, as well as other non-conventional weapons.

"While NTC forces appear to be controlling all relevant chemical and nuclear material sites, centralized command and control remains a concern," Martin said. "It has become clearer that there are additional sites with previously undeclared chemical weapons or materials that the government is about to formally declare" to the organization overseeing the convention that prohibits chemical weapons.

Libya also accumulated the largest known stockpile of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles in any non-producing country. While thousands were destroyed during NATO operations, Martin said the U.N. is increasingly concerned "over the looting and likely proliferation" of these weapons and other munitions, as well as a spate of newly laid mines.

Occupy Chicago: 130 arrested in city park protest (AP)

CHICAGO ? Anti-Wall Street demonstrators of the Occupy Chicago movement stood their ground in a downtown park in noisy but peaceful defiance of police orders to clear out, prompting 130 arrests early Sunday, authorities said.

Occupy Chicago spokesman Joshua Kaunert vowed after the arrests that protests would continue in the Midwest city.

"We're not going anywhere. There are still plenty of us," Kaunert told The Associated Press after the arrests, which took police more than an hour to complete.

Elsewhere in the nation, police reported 11 arrests overnight in the Occupy Cincinnati protests. Police said those arrested had stayed in that city's Fountain Square after Sunday's 3 a.m. closing time and each was charged with criminal trespass.

In Chicago, police began taking people into custody just before 1 a.m. Sunday. Those arrested were led in groups to vans and two large white buses as others clamored to be arrested.

"Take me next! Take me next!" some shouted as police began the arrests. Others chanted as they were led away: "We'll be back!"

Officers had begun placing metal barricades around the area of Chicago's Grant Park known as Congress Plaza about 11:10 p.m. Saturday, minutes after the park had closed. Afterward, police then went through the crowd and warned people to leave or risk arrest for remaining in the closed park in violation of a city ordinance.

Several of the protesters who stayed inside the barricades in the park sat on the ground. Others locked arms as police circled and then began arresting people.

"One: We are the people! Two: We are united! Three: The occupation is not leaving!" demonstrators shouted. Others joined in from just outside the park.

Chicago police said Sunday morning that 130 arrests had been made.

Kaunert said none of those arrested had resisted.

"Everybody was very peaceful and smiling and there was no violence, though a lot of chanting," he said.

He urged authorities to let the people resume protesting peacefully against the perceived greed and other ills they see on Wall Street and elsewhere in corporate America. He noted it was the second straight weekend that arrests had been made in the park after 175 arrests the previous Sunday after protesters set up tents past public hours.

"The police came in and again took away our right to free speech and assembly," he said. "Several paddywagons left and they had two very large prison buses and those are gone now."

Paulina Jasczuk, a 24-year-old dental receptionist, watched as her boyfriend, Philip Devon, was led away in the night hours. She threw him a white sweater against the chill of a fall night in Chicago.

"I'm proud of everyone who got arrested tonight," she told AP, adding she hoped they would inspire more demonstrators to join in the movement in the weeks ahead.

Demonstrators were taken away one by one and handcuffed with white plastic ties and. Some on the scene shouted: "This is what democracy looks like!"

Drums banged and some people clanged on metal.

Jonathan Sumner, 25, of Chicago, watched the arrests from outside the park and began shouting at officers: "Why are you doing this?"

"It's a sad day for the CPD" he said, referring to the Chicago Police Department.

Some said earlier that arrests only signal the importance of the Occupy movement.

"This movement will not be a serious movement until we take a stand, and getting arrested is just one way of taking a stand," said Max Farrar, 20, a junior political science major at DePaul University, speaking Saturday to a reporter.

About 1,500 people gathered for the protest that began Saturday. Demonstrators descended on the city park with hopes of making it the movement's permanent home. The group had started in Chicago's financial district before marching to the park.

Along the way, marchers chanted "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out!" and held signs that read "Greed Sucks" and "No War But The Class War" while police on horses blocked them from walking on the street on Michigan Avenue, leaving them with just the sidewalks to occupy.

Occupy Wall Street began a month ago in New York among a few young people, and has grown to tens of thousands around the country and the world.

In Cincinnati, Police Capt. Doug Wiesman said early Sunday that the 11 arrests carried out there were "straightforward" and without problems. A protester, Aaron Roco, told AP about 30 other protesters who remained on a sidewalk just outside the Cincinnati square during the police action weren't arrested.

After Gaddafi, Libya races to fill power vacuum (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? Racing to fill a power vacuum, Libya is to declare a war against Muammar Gaddafi's one-man rule over on Sunday and start building the multiparty democracy he once derided as being for "donkeys."

Tens of thousands of people who before this year's uprising had known nothing but Gaddafi's all-powerful police state are due to pack a square in the second city Benghazi to hear interim government leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil announce the "liberation" of Libya.

With big oil and gas resources and a relatively small population of some six million, Libya has the potential to become a prosperous country, but regional rivalries fostered by Gaddafi could erupt into yet more violence in the heavily armed country.

In Misrata, Hassan Mustafa Sadawi, viewing an impromptu war exhibition in a city ravaged by the conflict, said the large arsenal still in the hands of rebel forces had to be given up.

"There's a lot of weapons," he said. "It's impossible to have stability (in Libya). We'll take revenge on each other from time to time, maybe."

Muftah Lamlum, recently returned from 38 years of political exile in London, said he wanted to see a Western-style democracy ... But my greatest fear is ignorance...42 years of Gaddafi was a very long time."

Jalil's speech is intended to set the clock ticking on a process to set up a multiparty democracy, a system Gaddafi railed against for most of his 42 years in power.

In 2007 Gaddafi, whose "state of the masses" was seen by many Libyans as despotism, said democracy was a sham in which people were "ridden like donkeys" by powerful interests.

But some Libyans fear that without strong leadership the revolution could now collapse into armed infighting, preventing the country from ever attempting the novelty of the ballot box.

The lack of a clear plan for Gaddafi's burial suggests to some analysts that there is some justification for fears of a descent into leaderless turmoil.

The loosely disciplined militias that sprang up in each town to topple the dictator with the help of NATO airpower are still armed. The places they represent will want a greater say in the country's future, particularly the second and third cities Benghazi and Misrata which were starved of investment by Gaddafi.

It was fighters from Misrata who emerged from a lengthy and bloody siege to play a large part in taking Tripoli and later caught Gaddafi, cowering in a drainage pipe outside Sirte.

Libya's new leaders have a "very limited opportunity" to set aside their differences, said interim prime minister Mahmoud Jibril as he announced he was stepping down on Saturday.

Jibril said progress for Libya would need great resolution, both by interim leaders on the National Transitional Council and by six million war-weary people:

"First," he said, "What kind of resolve the NTC will show in the next few days?

"And the other thing depends mainly on the Libyan people -- whether they differentiate between the past and the future."

"I am counting on them to look ahead and remember the kind of agony they went through in the last 42 years," he added.

REGIONAL INFIGHTING

There is growing international disquiet about the chaotic scenes surrounding Gaddafi's apparent summary execution following the fall of his hometown of Sirte on Thursday.

A field commander in Misrata worried that trouble was brewing:

"The fear now is what is going to happen next," he said, speaking to Reuters privately, as ordinary Libyans, some taking pictures for family albums, filed in under armed guard to see for themselves that the man they feared was truly dead.

"There is going to be regional in-fighting. You have Zintan and Misrata on one side and then Benghazi and the east," the guerrilla said. "There is in-fighting even inside the army."

NEW DEMOCRACY

There is some unease abroad over what many believe was a summary execution of Gaddafi. U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay has called for an investigation into the killing, but very few Libyans share those concerns.

Arguments have arisen among Libya's factions about what to do with the corpse which has not been accorded the swift burial required by Islamic law and is beginning to decompose. Those viewing the body on Saturday were obliged to cover their faces with surgical masks.

Gaddafi's surviving family, in exile, wants his body and that of his son Mo'tassim to be handed over to tribal kinsmen from Sirte. NTC officials said they were trying to arrange a secret resting place to avoid loyalist supporters making it a shrine. Misrata does not want his body under its soil.

The disputes within the NTC have delayed the announcement of an end to the war several times.

But such worries are unlikely to be paramount in the minds of many Libyans on Sunday as they celebrate the beginning of a new era in their country's history.

It will set a clock ticking on a plan for a new government and constitutional assembly leading to full democracy in 2013.

"We hope we will have an elected democratic government with broad participation," student Ali Abu Shufa said.

Gaddafi promoted tribalism to keep the country divided, he said. "But now Gaddafi is dead, all the tribes will be united."

Gotham Awards nominate "The Descendents," "Take Shelter" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" and Sean Durkin's "Martha Marcy May Marlene" are among the top nominees for the Gotham Independent Film Awards, one of the two major film awards devoted to independent film.

In nominations announced on Thursday morning by the Independent Filmmaker Project, contenders in the Best Feature category are "Beginners," "The Descendants," "Meek's Cutoff," "Take Shelter" and "The Tree of Life."

In the Breakthrough Performance category, the year's biggest breakout, Jessica Chastain, fell through the cracks (too many performances to choose from?), though she was included in the Best Ensemble Performance category for "Take Shelter." Nominated individual performers are Felicity Jones in "Like Crazy," Elizabeth Olsen in "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Harmony Santana in "Gun Hill Road," Shailene Woodley in "The Descendants" and Jacob Wysocki in "Terri."

Nominees in the Breakthrough Director category included Sean Durkin for "Martha Marcy May Marlene," Mike Cahill for "Another Earth" and Vera Farmiga for "Higher Ground," while competitors for the Ensemble Performance award include the casts of "Beginners," "The Descendants," "Margin Call," "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and "Take Shelter."

Best Documentary nominees are "The Interrupters," "Better This World," "Bill Cunningham New York," "Hell and Back Again" and "The Woodmans."

Overall, two Fox Searchlight films, "The Descendants" and "Martha Marcy May Marlene," led with three nominations in the six announced categories. "Beginners" and "Take Shelter" each received two nods.

Winners will be announced at the Gotham ceremony in New York City on November 28. The show will also include career tributes to actress Charlize Theron, actor Gary Oldman, director David Cronenberg and executive Tom Rothman.

Unlike the more visible Film Independent Spirit Awards, which have set criteria to determine what constitutes an independent film, the Gothams consider each film on a case-by-case basis and use vague definitions.

To be eligible, for instance, a film must be made "with an economy of means," a looser qualifier than the Spirit Awards rule restricting entries to films made for less than $20 million.

It must be the result of "filmmaking with a point of view where the vision of an individual director, producer writer or writer/director is abundantly evident, and where the film cannot be classically defined as a 'work for hire.'"

A couple of the nominated films, including "The Tree of Life" and "Midnight in Paris," will not qualify for the Spirit Awards.

Last year, Gotham nominees "Black Swan," "Winter's Bone" and "The Kids Are All Right" all received Oscar Best Picture nominations, a record overlap.

Robot 'mermaids' swim detect seismic waves

Robots called "Mermaids" now floating in the oceans are helping to create images of the Earth's interior.

Each robot is known as a Mobile Earthquake Recorder in Marine Areas by Independent Divers, or Mermaid. They are equipped with hydrophones, or underwater microphones, with which they record seismic waves from quakes and other earth-shaking phenomena as they ripple through the water. The mics can pick up the waves of quakes from as far away as 7,450 miles (12,000 km).

The seismic waves sent out by these temblors help scientists draw a picture of the Earth's insides.

"Seismologists use seismic waves very much as X-rays," said researcher Yann Hello, a geophysicist at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France.

For instance, seismic waves slow down when they hit hotter rock and speed up when they encounter? colder rock, and "we analyze this information and translate it into a picture of the hot and cold regions inside the Earth," Hello told OurAmazingPlanet.

The heat-driven motions of rock in the deep Earth underlie the movements of continents and the earthquakes that can devastate cities, so having a more detailed picture of what's happening beneath our feet could better prepare us for such natural disasters.

Ocean gaps
One problem facing the effort to "see" what's happening down below is the vastness of the Earth's oceans. There are very few seismic stations in the oceans, which cover nearly three-quarters of the Earth, leading to gaps in our picture of the world's interior. Having robots out there can thus help fill in our picture of the deep Earth, Hello said.

The Mermaids float freely about 3,300 to 6,500 feet (1 to 2 kilometers) below the ocean's surface. During the initial testing of the robots, currently under way, they surface after recording data for a short time so that researchers can gather their data.

In the future, the robots will surface only after detecting powerful seismic waves, transmitting their data to satellites before returning to their floating depth. Each robot carries a GPS unit to provide its location, as well as sensors for temperature, salinity and ocean current strength.

Two prototype Mermaids have just completed their longest autonomous trips so far. One had a carbon hull, the other, aluminum. The carbon hull is lighter, helping a robot carry more batteries and work for longer in the field, but the aluminum hull proved less sensitive to perturbations in the water and ballasting errors.

Achieving new depths
Launched in June in the Ligurian Sea just south of Nice, France, these prototypes were programmed to dive to a series of cruising depths, surfacing after each new depth was maintained for three or four days. They detected a strong earthquake 5,870 miles (9,450 km) away, a magnitude 7.4 temblor near the Fox Islands off the coast of Alaska. [Related: Seafloor Sensors Listen to Quake Rumblings ]

The first fleet of a half-dozen fully operational aluminum-hulled Mermaids will be launched in the Indian Ocean in the second half of 2012. Their hardware will allow for oceanographic, weather, biological and seismological observations, researchers said.

The technology of these robots will only improve over time, researchers added. Scientists and engineers are now refining the artificial intelligence algorithms that help the Mermaids decide what seismic waves are meaningful or not, and are hoping to develop larger and more lightweight floats with batteries that allow them to survive for up to five years.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Oct. 4 issue of the journal Eos.

Jackson physician acted like employee not doctor: expert (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? A medical expert testified on Wednesday that Michael Jackson's doctor acted more like an employee than a physician by agreeing to give the pop star nightly doses of the potent anesthetic propofol to treat insomnia.

Dr. Steven Shafer, regarded as one of the leading researchers in the use of propofol, took the stand as the final prosecution witness in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray.

It is nearly unheard of to give propofol, normally used before surgery in a hospital setting, as a treatment for insomnia, said Shafer.

"We are in pharmacological 'Never Never Land' here, something that's only been done to Michael Jackson," he said.

In impassioned testimony, Shafer also cataloged what he said were Murray's failures as Jackson's personal physician, starting with agreeing to the pop star's request to receive propofol as a sleep aid at his rented Los Angeles mansion.

"Conrad Murray said yes, and that is what an employee does. And I do not see a difference between Conrad Murray saying yes to a request that Michael Jackson is making, and an employee who cleans the house agreeing to a request of Michael Jackson," Shafer said.

Shafer gave 17 instances of how Murray's treatment of Jackson on June 25, 2009 -- the day the singer died -- constituted "egregious" violations of common medical standards.

He blasted Murray for the over 20 minutes that elapsed between the time prosecutors believe he discovered Jackson had stopped breathing, and when an ambulance was called.

"It's just inconceivable to me. A physician would not do that," Shafer said.

NO RECORDS

Propofol was ruled the main cause of the "Thriller" singer's death. Murray admitted to police he gave Jackson the drug to help him sleep.

His attorneys claim Jackson gave himself an extra, fatal dose of the drug when Murray was out of the singer's bedroom.

Shafer, a professor at Columbia University and who helped set U.S. standards for propofol dosage, criticized Murray for not keeping medical records in the over two months he told police he was giving Jackson nightly doses of the drug.

"The family has a right to know what happened, and with no medical record, the family has been denied that right," Shafer said, raising his voice.

Jackson's parents, Katherine and Joseph, and two of his siblings showed little reaction as they sat in the courtroom.

Murray also remained unemotional during the testimony.

Jurors were shown a detailed video on the correct use of propofol -- a potentially damaging presentation that differed sharply from accounts of how Murray cared for Jackson.

The medical training video showed doctors in scrubs and gloves attending to a patient in a sterile operating room, with electronic monitors and displays. They meticulously checked medical tools and machines that witnesses say were absent in the bedroom where Murray gave Jackson propofol.

The defense is expected to begin presenting its case on Friday. Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison if convicted.

Seligman returns as Oscar producer (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? To the surprise of no one who's had anything to do with the Academy Awards for the past three decades, the Oscars have named Michael B. Seligman the supervising producer of the 84th Academy Awards.

This will mark Seligman's 35th year on the Oscar show, much of that time as the Oscar show's money man, negotiating contracts and dealing with the logistics of an enormous and complicated operation. He's also the person who originally came up with the idea for gift baskets to attract Oscar presenters.

Longtime Oscar-watchers now assume that the next step for co-producers Brett Ratner and Don Mischer will be to bring aboard Danette Herman to supervise the show's talent ... but that's another press release for another day.

Alternative Health Information: This Will Be A ? ? Health and ...

You will find that there is so much that can be learned about health and also alternative medicine, sometimes it is easy to get confused. Another thing you will find that even though more people are looking into alternative medicine there are other people who have not ever worried about just what they put in their bodies. Over the last few years I have been looking into alternative medicines and the positive results that they can have your general health, and this is something that I thought that more people should know about.

Generally, alternative medicine works with a wide selection of non-traditional medicines and techniques of treatment for many different medical situations people can find themselves in. One other thing you are going to recognize is that because more and more individuals are looking into alternative medicine, this is becoming something that is really becoming more popular for many individuals.

Recently I have been performing a lot of research for articles that deal with alternative medicine and I thought more individuals should be aware of what this is. Prescription drugs are also a thing that I have avoided making use of my whole life. I have always been extremely cautious about taking any kind of drugs that are prescribed by doctors do to the negative effects these drugs can have. Something that really makes me wonder why people still take these prescription medications are all the side effects that are listed in the commercials when they are marketing the drugs. You really must comprehend that if you take a drug to remedy something but the drug winds up causing 3 more issues that you will end up requiring more drugs for, that this really becomes a vicious circle. To date, we?ve taken some time to get some interesting info about information associated with Portable Defibrillator. Stay with me to find out more interesting tips that you just probably did not know about before looking over this article.

This of course, is one of the primary reasons that more and more individuals are looking into alternative medicine as an alternative. The reason for this is because people are getting tired of taking more and more drugs only to deal with issues brought about by other drugs. So allow me to ask you a question, what makes more sense, taking harmful chemical substances such as prescription drugs or using all natural remedies that have no damaging side effects.

There is far too much to say about alternative medicine here, but I just wanted to point out that there are alternatives to taking all those drugs that cause all sorts of side effects. As with anything else in your life you will see that you get to make the choice on how best you feel you can take care of your body. Although I think that alternative, natural options are the best choice for my body, you have to determine what you think is best for you. If you wish to find additional information about various alternative medicines and how they can help you, the world wide web is loaded with books and guides.

The Critical Importance of Films You Know Nothing About

Fernando Morena and Eliu Armas star in Hermano. Enlarge Music Box Films

Fernando Morena and Eliu Armas star in Hermano.

Music Box Films

Fernando Morena and Eliu Armas star in Hermano.

When was the last time you saw a movie you knew nothing about?

It's a trickier thing to accomplish than it might seem to be. After all, if a film comes from a director whose work you've ever seen, you know something about it. If it stars an actor you've ever seen or ever read about ? someone with any kind of a reputation, good or bad ? you know something about it. If you've seen a trailer or an ad on TV, of course, then you know a lot about it. If it's "from the people who brought you," or "the director of," you're specifically being told what to expect, even if falsely. More often than not, the biggest concern about a film before it's made available is that if you don't know anything about it, you won't go.

For Americans, seeing unfamiliar foreign films is often perceived, quite sadly, as some kind of a striking out against Hollywood's popular entertainment. It has the whiff of protest and self-definition, as if what matters is not the seeing but the having seen. And certainly, these films sometimes bubble their way up into American distribution because of their enormously high quality, and that's a reason to be open to them; it does sometimes mark you as a person interested in superior quality. But what I think is just as important about maintaining that openness, even in the case of flawed projects, is that it lets you see a film you know truly nothing ? or almost nothing ? about.

I saw a Venezuelan film called Hermano this weekend. Here's what I knew about it before I saw it: It was a drama, it had something to do with soccer and, in keeping with the title, it had something to do with brothers. That's it. That's it. Never heard of the director, Marcel Rasquin (it's his first film), never heard of or seen any of the actors ever before (they're quite new, too), didn't know whether it was tragic or uplifting or gritty or sunny or what. I knew it won awards at film festivals in Moscow and Havana, and ... that's all.

It's a good movie, particularly for a new director. A few scenes ring false, but overall, it's very affecting, and the lead performances from Eliu Armas and Fernando Moreno ? as, indeed, soccer-playing brothers ? are absolutely dynamite. It's not the best thing I've seen all year, but it's good and worthwhile and thoughtful. But what was most valuable about it, I found, was that I completely lacked any context for it. It was completely uncoded.

?

Everything you know something about when you go is, intentionally or unintentionally, coded. The director, the actor, the type of film, everything sends a message, even if it's not the most obvious one. One example: I watched Buried the other night, the claustrophobic thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, and one of the things I found myself musing on was Reynolds' decision to take a role where his looks would be as useless as possible. In a way, it detaches him from his reputation as a pretty boy. But the fact remains: He's Ryan Reynolds. I've seen him before, quite a lot, so knowing it's him means that coding is there for me, even when he's in the dark.

Sometimes, the coding that comes with familiarity is an advantage. George Clooney being George Clooney, with all the legendary dreaminess and classic Hollywood charm that's been attached to him as he became not just George Clooney the actor but George Clooney the icon, was very good for his very different roles in both Michael Clayton and Up In The Air. It was good for both of those parts that he was familiar and beloved, just as it helped the suspense and surprises of Psycho for Janet Leigh to be Janet Leigh.

With directors, a reputation can help an audience stick with something that seems to have a bizarre and inconsistent tone, because you can trust that the director is going somewhere with it, or at least could be. It would have been more difficult for anyone other than Quentin Tarantino, I think, to pull an audience all the way through Inglourious Basterds without causing them to lose confidence and disengage.

It's good now and then, though, to see something where, for you, there's absolutely no coding in it at all. Obviously, the marketing of a movie often sends unmistakable signals about where it's going and who the good and bad guys are before you ever get there. A story of a good and a bad brother, for instance, will tell you who's who in the commercials. Even if you don't get it from the commercials, there's a decent chance you'll get it from the casting. You'll get it from the way the two are shot from the opening sequence forward. You'll get it from the score.

When you don't know anything ? what tradition the film is in, what its genre is, how it would be marketed, or who the target audience is ? not only do you see that film differently, but you see other films differently, too. The lack of signals is palpable and initially unsettling because the experience is so rare, but like any negative space, it draws a kind of attention to itself. It made me think about the avalanche of coding attached to a movie like Moneyball: Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Aaron Sorkin, baseball, Michael Lewis, Michael Lewis' book ... there are a hundred ways to be either with or against that film before you watch a frame of it.

There was a discussion after Hermano in which something remarkable happened: Multiple people in the room took the position that the film's ending either was "ambiguous" in a way I believe it wasn't, or, in some cases, took the fairly firm position that it ended in a way I believe it clearly didn't. One of them said, in fact, that he believed the film was of a particular genre, he felt films in that genre should end in a specific way, and therefore, he chose to believe that was the way Hermano ended, even though ? again, in my opinion ? he was unquestionably changing the ending that was on the screen.

On the one hand, it was utterly delightful to see people actually unable to agree on what happened at the end of the movie, even though it wasn't some kind of an unsettling, freaky, surreal film or anything like that. It was straightforward storytelling, I believed it communicated exactly what happened as clearly as they do in any reasonably intelligent drama, and other people thought that essentially the opposite happened.

Now, if I'm right, then it's a little upsetting for the screenwriters, because if I'm right, the people in the room with me read the ending to send the opposite message ? the diametrically opposed message about life ? from the one that was intended. But it was also ... well, it was so completely weird that it was oddly great. We all wrote on blank slates, and even if I didn't agree with the conclusions that other people reached, we were all essentially on our own. I couldn't go read fifty different reviews and message boards to find out who was right and who was wrong. What's more, we were told that in another screening, the audience started debating an entirely different theory about the movie that the people at my screening immediately scoffed at. (We were discussing perceived ambiguity, but those people were crackpots, naturally.)

It was an enormously valuable experience, precisely because I can't say for sure who was right. (It was me, though.) (I'm just sure of it.) The movie was just out there, on its own, on the screen, no hints. No codes, no semaphore, no homages to anyone. Here's a movie; see what you think. It's an experience to try to have regularly, because it's really the only way to make sure you're still noticing everything you carry with you into the average multiplex picture.

There is a free screening of Hermano tonight, Sept. 26, at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. Check out the details.

XE.com - NEWSMAKER-Corydon becomes Danish finance minister

By Jakob Vesterager

COPENHAGEN, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Denmark's finance minister, Social Democrat Bjarne Fog Corydon, 38, has served as Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt's chief of staff and economic adviser for six years.

He will take charge of fiscal policy in a country struggling to emerge from its deepest recession since World War Two.

'It is not something I had expected, but it is a dream job,' Corydon said on TV2 News.

'It is a job I have always hoped to have at some point in my life. It is a place where you make the big decisions for the future of Denmark and carry out some of the things I have been working on in my former capacity.'

Since 2005 Corydon has headed the Social Democratic Party's analysis and information department, which supports the politicians with technical expertise and advice.

Corydon was one of the driving forces behind the policies that won the Sept. 15 election for Thorning-Schmidt's 'Red bloc' alliance to end a decade of centre-right rule.

He is also the architect of the ill-fated proposal that Danes should work 12 more minutes per day -- an hour more per week -- to boost productivity.

The plan was blasted during the election campaign by political opponents who derided it as '12 minutes' money' and is not expected to be a part of the new three-party government's policy programme to be announced later on Monday.

Corydon has a working-class pedigree. His father was a grounds keeper at a cemetery and his mother worked at a car repair shop.

He won a seat in parliament for the first time two weeks ago with 8,299 personal votes.

'This is one of the biggest gambles I have seen in Danish politics,' Thomas Larsen, political columnist at daily Berlingske told Reuters.

'He is a bright young fellow and has been crucial to Thorning-Schmidt making it to the top. But he has no experience at all as a politician, and now he will go from being an unknown person to being one of the most important members of the government,' Larsen said.

Another Social Democrat, Henrik Sass Larsen, had been tipped to become finance minister. But last week he dropped out after failing to get a security clearance due to links to a Bandidos biker gang member.

Corydon joined the Social Democratic Party when he was 19 and says U.S. President John F. Kennedy is his political role model.

He got a degree in political science from the University of Aarhus in 2000.

Married, but Gay?

When couples get divorced, there is the obvious hurt, confusion and anger. What will it be like living alone? What will you tell the kids? Who is the other woman or man? These feelings become more complicated when your spouse falls for someone of their same sex. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that at least 4,000,000 women have been involved with men that have had sex with other men. Not to mention, according to the Family Pride Coalition, 20 percent of all gay men in America are in heterosexual marriages. Women, too, have gay relationships. These numbers are more difficult to attain due to the lack of understanding of women?s sexuality. In 2004, at Northwestern University, researchers found that both gay and straight females became sexually aroused when they viewed both heterosexual and lesbian porn. The straight males in the study only became aroused by women. Dr. Michael Bailey, the lead researcher, reported that, ?Women?s sexual desire is less rigidly directed toward a particular sex as compared to men and more changeable over time than men?s.?

There are couples that deny their sexual preference, stay in heterosexual marriages and raise healthy children. However, it is not easy. ?Many times when couples are splitting due to falling in love with their gay lover, the partner left will usually admit there were signs, but they ignored them due to fear or to preserve the unity of the family. As with any type of affair, it is not the actual reality that is most damaging, but the ?cover up? and lies that kept it in place.

If you are dating someone or suspicious that your spouse may be in love with a same sex partner, it is wise not to act on assumption, but try to explore further. No straight person can understand the depth of shame or feelings of disappointment that may go along with ?coming out.? It is also important to understand that your partner may, and most likely does, love you, but they may not feel desire toward you. Belittling your partner will only make them feel more shameful and remorseful that they told you the truth. Most likely, you aren?t guilty of anything other than being the wrong sex.

For couples going through this dilemma, one of the most difficult aspects is how to begin the conversation. Beginning this talk should be done in the privacy of the couple?s home and at a time when neither is stressed. For spouses who have suspicion or an awkward feeling in regards to their husband?s or wife?s same sex relationship, this script may help you get started. ?I am not sure why, and feel confused, but I am uncomfortable with the way you act when you are around _____.? This ?I statement? sentence is respectful, direct and non-accusatory. It reminds your partner that it is not them who makes you uncomfortable, but their behavior around a specific person. If you are married to someone you feel no desire for, due to your sexual preference, then I advise you to once again talk to them in private when neither of you are stressed. Tell them the truth of your feelings. Make sure they understand it is not their fault, and you cannot change how you feel. It will hurt both of you badly, but nothing can compare to the hurt they would feel if you never told them and they self discovered you had lived a lie for years.

To be able to live an authentic life is important for all of us. Quality of life scales include this measurement to determine one?s overall satisfaction with life. Denying your sexuality preference chips away at your ability to be authentic in all areas of your life and, depending on your actions, it can put your spouse or significant other at risk for disease. If you haven?t been honest with your spouse, then opening that conversation could be the very best thing you could do to deepen your relationship. Leaving your partner is always devastating. Leaving your partner because you have never been the person they believed you were, and you can no longer live with the lie, is the first step when walking towards an authentic life.

Eyes Vision Symptoms and Treatments | Health

Eyes Vision Symptoms and Treatments

Article by Dr. Mital John

Normally when we look at an object the muscles of the eyes co-ordinate with each other to focus on the same object. The brain on receiving information from the eyes processes it and come up with a 3 ? dimensional image. But, what if there is lack of muscle co-ordination, due to some reason.

* Nearsightedness* Farsightedness* Color blindness* Night blindness

Eye symptoms may involve changes in vision, changes in the appearance of the eye, or an abnormal sensation in the eye. Eye symptoms typically develop as a result of a problem in the eye but occasionally indicate a problem elsewhere in the body.

Because most people who suffer from color blindness are those who have a genetic defect on the Y chromosome (the chromosome unique to men), men are far more likely to suffer from this eye problem.

Eye twitching: ? While usually harmless, an eye twitch can be very annoying. Twitching may be associated with the following:* Stress* Caffeine* Fatigue* Pink eye* Panic disorder

Itchy eyes: ? Are your eyes itching? Itchy, red eyes can be very uncomfortable. Here are a few conditions that may cause itchy eyes:* Pink eye* Blepharitis* Dry eye syndrome* Allergies

Tired eyes: ? Do your eyes feel tired and fatigued? The following conditions may cause tired eyes:* Dry eye syndrome* Computer vision syndrome* Farsightedness* Astigmatism

Alternative treatments and exercises for the eyes are some of the best methods for curing the problems of the eye. It has been seen that there are various kinds of exercises easily available for improving the vision of the eyes. Through these exercises one can improve the vision of the eyes and also ensure their longevity and health.

Vitamin A is found in green, orange and yellow vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, corn, and also in egg yolks and liver. It helps to fight night blindness and cataracts and improves night vision.

Corn and Green vegetables? another study on eye health and ocular nutrition has shown a reduced risk of developing cataracts for persons having diets higher in zeaxanthin and lutein. Foods high in these two carotenoids include broccoli, collard greens, green peas, corn, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, turnip greens and zucchini.

Vitamin C is found in green, leafy vegetables and citrus fruits like broccoli, potatoes, peppers, oranges, berries, strawberries. It reduces the pressure in glaucoma patients? eyes, delays macular degeneration and reduces cataract risk. Our body can neither create Vitamin C nor store it for long in the body.

Diets are also known as effective eye health supplements and unless you get them, vision can?t be improved. What should be the proper diets therefore? Though many advise to devour carrots and term that they are helpful, they cannot change the vision although the vitamins can better it.

Timothy Karr: What's Going On?

Three progressive minds attempt to capture the zeitgeist of the #OccupyWallStreet protests, which have moved with tremendous speed from the margins to the mainstream.

For evidence of this look no further than the protest coverage that made the front and editorial pages of today's New York Times. For the first two weeks of these protests the Times' editors for the most part had joined with other establishment media in a communal snub of the "Occupy" activism and its relevance.

There's a reason for the rapid, organic spread of the Wall Street actions, write Glenn Greenwald, Matt Stoller and Micah Sifry, three passionate thinkers on the evolution of movements in the age of open networks.

In his Wednesday commentary for Salon, Greenwald blasted the media and establishment Democrats for their smug dismissal of the protests, diagnosing their scorn as a form of self hatred that strikes those who "feign populist opposition to Wall Street for political gain."

Greenwald writes:

"A significant aspect of this progressive disdain is grounded in the belief that the only valid form of political activism is support for Democratic Party candidates, and a corresponding desire to undermine anything that distracts from that goal. Indeed, the loyalists of both parties have an interest in marginalizing anything that might serve as a vehicle for activism outside of fealty to one of the two parties...

"[T]the people willing to engage in protests like these at the start may lack (or reject the need for) media strategies, organizational hierarchies, and messaging theories. But they're among the very few people trying to channel widespread anger into activism rather than resignation, and thus deserve support and encouragement -- and help."

On Thursday Stoller wrote that the movement had taken on religious dimensions, which makes this protest a different animal than other politicized gatherings. "No one knows what to expect," he writes, adding:
"What these people are doing is building, for lack of a better word, a church of dissent. It's not a march, though marches are spinning off of the campground. It's not even a protest, really. It is a group of people, gathered together, to create a public space seeking meaning in their culture. They are asserting, together, to each other and to themselves, 'we matter'."
Sifry chimed in on Saturday with a Tech President article describing the networked power of the spreading protests. "This thing is growing in Internet time and no wonder, for it is built on networked culture," he writes. (I discuss the importance of preserving these networks in an earlier article for Huffington Post).

Sifry casts the Occupy Wall Street protests in a different light as well. To him they're connected to the new political dissent that's sweeping the world:

"[W]e're no longer in a what veteran activist Myles Horton would have called an organizational phase of political activity, where meetings have walls around them, messages have managers, advocacy is centrally paid for and done by professional lobbyists, marches have beginnings and endings, and the story line goes neatly gives from petition to legislation to reform...

"I don't pretend to know where the 'Occupy' movement is going to go, though its main purpose appears to be to show first of all that it is here to stay, and to force a different perspective into a national discourse that up until now has marginalized and ignored grassroots anti-corporate social justice advocacy."

At the moment I'm seated near the shore of the Hudson River watching the sunrise break through the clouds over Manhattan.

I was awakened at 3:30 a.m. to the sound of heavy rain on the streets and immediately thought of those huddled under blue tarps in Zuccotti Square, three miles away, and of others who may have spent the night in cells following Saturday's mass arrest on the Brooklyn Bridge.

By inserting themselves in the midst of the problem, holding their ground against the elements both natural and man made, and applying their network strength against the establishment greed that has sunk our democracy to an historical low, the "Occupy" protesters have struck upon something that connects the concerns of many.

As more people learn of their sacrifice it seems only natural that the support will grow.
