A farmer in Oregon has found some genetically engineered wheat growing on his land. It's an unwelcome surprise, because this type of wheat has never been approved for commercial planting.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it's investigating, trying to find out how this wheat got there. The USDA says there's no risk to public health, but wheat exporters are worried about how their customers in Asia and Europe will react.

In fact, worry about export markets is the main reason why genetically engineered wheat isn't on the market in the first place.

The biotech company Monsanto did create varieties of wheat that tolerate the weedkiller glyphosate, or Roundup ? just as it created "Roundup Ready" corn, soybeans, cotton and canola. It also carried out field trials of this wheat in 16 different states.

But the country's wheat growers told the company that they did not want it.

"We are not in favor of commercializing any biotech trait unless it's gone through regulatory approvals in the U.S. and in other countries," says Steve Mercer, vice president of communications for U.S. Wheat Associates. Many countries, including some that import wheat from the U.S., are quite hostile to genetically engineered crops.

Monsanto dropped the wheat project. It never asked for government approval, and it ended its field trials of wheat in 2005.

Fast forward eight years. About a month ago, a farmer in eastern Oregon noticed some wheat plants growing where he didn't expect them, and they didn't die when he sprayed them with Roundup.

The farmer sent samples of these curious plants to Carol Mallory-Smith, a scientist at Oregon State University who has investigated other cases in which genetically engineered crops spread beyond their approved boundaries.

She found that this wheat was, in fact, genetically engineered. She passed samples on to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which confirmed her results.

Bernadette Juarez, an official with the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, said in a statement that her agency is collecting more samples from the farm, conducting more tests. "We have a team of dedicated investigators working on the ground daily to figure out what's going on here," she says.

Nobody knows how this wheat got to this farm. Monsanto's last field trials in Oregon were in 2001. After all such trials, the genetically engineered crops are supposed to be completely removed.

Also, nobody knows how widely this genetically engineered wheat has spread, and whether it's been in fields of wheat that were harvested for food.

According to the USDA, even if it has, there's no danger to public health.
Still, if further tests show that this unapproved wheat has spread into the food supply, it could play havoc with wheat sales.

In 2006, traces of genetically engineered rice ? also unapproved ? were discovered in large parts of the American rice harvest. That discovery shut down America's rice exports to some countries. Exporters lost millions of dollars. The wheat harvest is much bigger.

Steve Mercer, from U.S. Wheat Associates, says there's no indication that this will happen to wheat. Right now, it's just a few isolated plants growing in eastern Oregon.

"We're in the process of getting in touch with all of our customers," he says. "We are going to work to make sure that they have all the information that they need to make their decisions, and reassure them that this isolated trait hasn't entered commerce."

So far, he says, those customers aren't making any decisions. They're just asking for more information.

Wave of bombings kills 26 in fresh Iraq attacks

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of bombs in Iraq, including one targeting a provincial governor, killed at least 26 people Thursday and wounded dozens as a tireless wave of violence further rattled the country.

Iraq is experiencing its most relentless round of bloodshed since the 2011 U.S. military withdrawal, deepening fears that the country is heading back toward the widespread sectarian fighting that pushed it to the brink of civil war in the years after the invasion.

More than 500 people have been killed in May, with attacks escalating in the last two weeks. The month before was Iraq's deadliest since June 2008, according to a United Nations tally that put April's death toll at more than 700.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's office said he spent three hours inspecting checkpoints throughout the capital late the previous night, underscoring growing concerns about the security forces' ability to stem the violence.

Authorities in Baghdad also announced a ban in effect from early Friday on cars bearing temporary black license plates, which are common in post-war Iraq, where for years it was difficult to obtain new ones. The plates are typically on older model vehicles and are more difficult to trace, and authorities say they are frequently used in car bombings.

Most of Thursday's blasts went off in Baghdad. Car bombs killed four in the northeastern Shiite neighborhood of Binouq, and three died in a bombing at a market selling spare car parts in central Baghdad, according to police.

In Baghdad's eastern Shiite Ur neighborhood, a parked car bomb went off next to an army patrol, killing four and wounding 17, police said.

Police officials also said that a roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol in the largely Shiite central commercial district of Karradah, killing three people there.

The Karradah blast shattered glass and twisted metal signs on several storefronts, and left the stricken police unit's modified Ford pickup truck charred and mangled.

"What have these innocent people done to deserve this?" asked witness Sinan Ali. "So many people were hurt. Who is responsible?"

In Baghdad's northern Shiite neighborhood of Shaab, a car bomb exploded in a commercial area, killing six civilians and wounding 17 others.

In the largely Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah in the capital's north, a car bomb struck near a military convoy, killing three people, including two soldiers, according to police. Another 14 people were wounded in that attack.

Another police patrol was struck in the southern neighborhood of Saydiyah, injuring six.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualties.

In Anbar province, the provincial governor escaped an assassination attempt when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden car into his convoy, his deputy Dhari Akan said. The governor escaped unharmed, but four of his guards were wounded, Arkan said.

Anbar is a vast Sunni-dominated province west of Baghdad that has been the center for months of protests against the Shiite-led government.

In the northern city of Mosul, two police officers said a suicide bomber killed three when he blew himself up on a federal police checkpoint. Mosul is a former insurgent stronghold, located about 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to talk to the media.

The United Nations envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, urged Iraqi leaders to do more to urgently "pull the country out of this mayhem."

"Systemic violence is ready to explode at any moment," he said in a statement.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks but blame is likely to fall on al-Qaida's Iraq arm, which frequently carries out bombing attacks against civilians and security forces in an effort to undermine faith in the Shiite-led government.

Other militant groups have also grown more active in recent months, including the Army of the Men of the Naqshabandi Order, which has ties to members of Saddam Hussein's now-outlawed Baath party.

The attacks came hours after bomb blasts tore through two Baghdad neighborhoods Wednesday evening. At least 30 people were killed, including several members of a wedding party in the mixed Sunni-Shiite Jihad neighborhood.

The southwestern neighborhood was one of the earliest flashpoints in Baghdad's descent into sectarian bloodshed in the years following the 2003 U.S. led invasion. It housed mainly Sunni civil servants and security officials under Saddam Hussein's regime, though many Shiites now live there too.

Many of Jihad's Sunni residents earlier this year received threatening leaflets from a Shiite militant group, the Mukhtar Army, warning them to leave.

Nicholas Galanin Is Part of a Generation That Is Redefining ?Native?

Nicholas Galanin, "Things Are Looking Native, Native?s Looking Whiter" (2012)

SAN FRANCISCO ? How would you describe the art of Native Americans? If you were?unfamiliar?with the field of Native American contemporary art then you might muse on woven rugs in rich hues, ceramic vessels, silver jewelry inlaid with turquoise, petroglyphs etched or painted on sandstone walls, and carved totems with animal motifs. However, it is not the whole truth of what is going on in the indigenous art world as recent exhibitions, including at the Power Plant in Toronto and?Wilmer Jennings Gallery in New York, suggest.

?I Looooove Your Culture: Hipsters in Headdresses? Bowties

?I Looooove Your Culture: Hipsters in Headdresses? bowties

For several decades, younger generations of Native American artists, more commonly called First Nations artists in Canada, have ventured beyond their traditional aesthetics to make work that deals with and references contemporary culture in tandem with their indigenous roots. Artists like Da-ka-xeen Mehner (Tlingit/N?ishga), C. Maxx Stevens (Seminole), and Tanis Maria S?eiltin (Tlingit), to name a few, are widely exhibited both domestically at major museums and galleries, as well as internationally. In addition to the rising presence of Native Americans on the contemporary art scene, they are making their mark in the fashion world too.

It is clear that interest in Native American design is ripe, if controversial. A number of recent debacles in the fashion and entertainment industry appropriated ?native? motifs in various unauthorized and disrespectful contexts. From the 2012 Victoria?s Secret controversy?surrounding the lingerie ensemble donned by model Karlie Kloss, which featured a war-bonnet and squash blossom necklace to the photo shoot of actress Michelle Williams done up in ?redface? on the cover of AnOther magazine or singer Gwen Stefani scantily clad in ?Indian? garb for her 2012 music video ?Looking Hot? (that was subsequently removed from all media outlets), and event the?lawsuit against Urban Outfitters for its ?Navajo? panties that same year, the use of native imagery as if it is not a living and breathing culture is shocking. These were shameful transgressions, but some Native American artists are venturing into the world of fashion too, reclaiming the respectful use of their culture?s aesthetic in new and interesting ways.

"Inert" (2009)

Nicholas Galanin, ?Inert? (2009)

One such voice is that of Tlingit/Aleut artist?Nicholas Galanin, whose recent Vancouver exhibition was satirically titled?I Loooove your Culture?and took place at?Trench Gallery. From conceptual art installations to his career as a musician, and newer projects flowing into the world of fashion and even salmon fishing, Galanin lets his creativity bleed into a myriad of avenues of expression, both visual and auditory. Galanin represents the hybridity that occurs living on the reservation in the digital age.

Nicholas Galanin

Portrait of Nicholas Galanin

Born in in Sitka, in southeastern Alaska, Galanin first got involved in the visual arts by learning the traditional crafts of his tribe from his father and uncle, then headed to London to study at London Guildhall University ? an experience that pushed him to explore new artistic terrain. ?They [Guildhall] thought my work was too literal,? says Galanin. ?They didn?t want me to do it.? Galanin confesses that the Native-American aesthetic he began with while studying in London was not met with approval, and that he was encouraged to go beyond what he knew as a Native-American artist and embrace a more diverse approach to aesthetics and practice. Following his stint in London, where he received a bachelor?s degree in jewelry design, Galanin headed down south, way down south, and enrolled in the graduate school at Massey University in New Zealand, where he furthered his study of native arts and earned a graduate degree in Indigenous Visual Arts in 2004.

Galanin embraces contemporary aesthetics but laces them with elements of his own culture. From pieces like his recent print series that take Andy Warhol?s factory aesthetic of pop-bright colors and graphic contrast and marries that with iconic, historical images of Native Americans superimposed with text, to his film project featuring a break-dancer dancing to the beat of Native chanting and drums, hybridity is a driving force.

"Operation Geronimo"

Nicholas Galanin, ?Operation Geronimo? (2013)

Galanin wants his work to link his heritage and contemporary culture, but does not want to impose any predetermined idea of what that means. ?I don?t want to force them to sit together,? he adds. Galanin stresses that ?you have to use your own unique perspective, we all have one. Use your own unique perspective and try to contribute and not just consume.?

There is a give and take, an engagement between the politics of seeing and the act of creating that exists in Galanin?s work. This tension is interestingly echoed in a recent foray into fashion. ?I?ve made some ties and recently completed a course on shoemaking,? he explains. The fashion label Beyond Buckskin Boutique, which calls itself ?the first ever Native American-operated online gallery store specializing in Native-made fashion, jewelry, and accessories,? features Galanin?s work, which is partly an attempt to reclaim agency in the aesthetic of tribal-influenced garb.

Galanin is sure to be more visible this year. His work will be included in group shows at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Five Myles in Brooklyn, the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, and the National Gallery of Canada. He also recently received a fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis.

?Culture cannot be contained as it unfolds,? he explains in his artist statement. ?My art enters this stream at many different points, looking backwards, looking forwards, generating its own sound and motion. I am inspired by generations of Tlingit creativity and contribute to this wealthy conversation through active curiosity. There is no room in this exploration for the tired prescriptions of the ?Indian Art World? and its institutions. Through creating I assert my freedom.?

This Is Not A Silent Movie:?Four Contemporary Alaska Native Artists continues at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles (5814 Wilshire Boulevard, Miracle Mile, Los Angeles)?until September 8.

NASA IRIS: Improving our view of the sun

May 29, 2013 ? In late June 2013, NASA will launch a new set of eyes to offer the most detailed look ever of the sun's lower atmosphere, called the interface region. This region is believed to play a crucial role in powering the sun's dynamic million-degree atmosphere, the corona. The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph or IRIS mission will provide the best resolution so far of the widest range of temperatures for of the interface region, an area that has historically been difficult to study.

"This region is crucial for understanding how the corona gets so hot," said Joe Davila, IRIS project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "For the first time, we will have the capability to observe it at fundamental physical scale sizes and see details that have previously been hidden."

IRIS's capabilities are uniquely tailored to unravel the interface region by providing both high-resolution images and a kind of data known as spectra.

For its high-resolution images, IRIS will capture data on about one percent of the sun at a time. While these are relatively small snapshots, IRIS will be able to see very fine features, as small as 150 miles across.

"We have some great space observatories currently looking at the sun," said Bart DePontieu, the IRIS science lead at Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, Calif. "But when it comes to the interface region, we've never been able to resolve individual structures. We have been able only to see conglomerates of various structures. Now we will finally be able to observe the details."

IRIS's images will be three to four times as detailed as the images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory -- though SDO can observe the whole sun at once. SDO's wavelengths are not tailored, however, to see the interface region. Scientists can use IRIS observations to hone in on smaller details while working with the larger instruments, such as SDO or the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Hinode, to capture images of the entire sun. Together, the observatories will explore how the corona works and impacts Earth -- SDO and Hinode monitoring the solar surface and outer atmosphere, with IRIS watching the region in between.

Ultraviolet images look at only one wavelength of light at a time, but IRIS will also provide spectra, a kind of data that can show information about many wavelengths of light at once. Spectrographs split the sun's light into its various wavelengths and measure how much of any given wavelength is present. This is then portrayed on a graph showing spectral "lines" -- taller lines correspond to wavelengths in which the sun emits relatively more radiation.

Each spectral line also corresponds to a given temperature, so this provides information about how much material of a particular temperature is present. The images from IRIS' telescope will record observations of material at specific temperatures, ranging from 5,000 kelvins to 65,000 kelvins (8,540 F to 116,540 F) -- and up to 10 million kelvins (about 18 million F) during solar flares -- a range best suited to observe material on the sun's surface and in the interface region.

"By looking at spectra of material in these temperature ranges, we can also diagnose velocity and perhaps density of the material, too," said De Pontieu.

The IRIS instrument will capture a new image every five to 10 seconds, and spectra about once every two seconds. These unique capabilities will be coupled with state-of-the-art 3-D numerical modeling sophisticated enough to deal with the complexity of this region. The modeling makes use of supercomputers at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffet Field, Calif.

In combination, IRIS' resolution, fast imaging rate, wide temperature coverage and computer modeling will enable scientists for the first time to track solar material as it is accelerated and heated in the interface region and thus help pinpoint where and how the plasma gains energy and heat along its travels through the lower levels of the solar atmosphere.

IRIS was developed by Lockheed Martin as a NASA Small Explorer mission. The NASA Explorer Program is designed to provide frequent, low-cost access to space for heliophysics and astrophysics missions using small- to mid-sized spacecraft. Goddard manages the Explorer Program for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Major contributions for IRIS were provided by Lockheed Martin Sensing and Exploration Systems, NASA's Ames Research Center, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Montana State University, Stanford University, the Norwegian Space Centre and the University of Oslo.

Mermaids: Are they real? NOAA says 'no,' but Mom and Animal Planet say ...

Mermaids, for the mom who wrote the book on them, spark the most amazing questions from people who should know better. Still, Mom and Animal Planet want to stretch childhood just a little longer.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / May 28, 2013

Are mermaids real? As real as you want to make one: Here is a mermaid coloring page from Lisa Suhay's book. Enlarge this image, save it to your computer, and print. Kids can color them, add sequins, glitter, and even feathers. Then cut it out and glue to a popsicle stick to make a mermaid puppet for summer fun.

Ever since the first little mermaid sat on a rock to sing a scale, children have asked parents, ?are mermaids real??

Skip to next paragraph Lisa Suhay

Lisa Suhay, who has four sons at home in Norfolk, Va., is a children?s book author and founder of the Norfolk (Va.) Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) , a nonprofit organization serving at-risk youth via mentoring and teaching the game of chess for critical thinking and life strategies.

Depending on our personal commitment to the maintenance of childhood innocence and the magic of TV, especially Animal Planet?s Mermaids docu-tales (documentary fairytales) we can make childhood stretch just a bit longer. However, be careful what you wish for, lest you end up with adults who find themselves, like Peter Pan, unable to grow up and face the music of real science on sirens.

Given the ocean of Titanic news events we must all slog through daily, it?s little wonder I ??who literally wrote the book on Mermaids ? meet so many adults as well as children who ask me, ?Are mermaids really real?? Over the past 10 years of living in Norfolk, Virg. where I have written two children?s books about merfolk and created a read and walk story trail from one larger-than-life-size mermaid sculpture to the next.

While I love science, I also have a household of men, four sons and a husband, who are all serious, logical, literal business 24-7. In response to that, I try to generate a little mommy magic and occasionally take a poke at science just to lighten things up for my sons and my sanity. Given the fact that science tends to flip-flop on everything from the value of fish oil in our diets to the shroud of Turin, I think it?s OK to have a little fun at its expense every now and then with a mermaid tale or two.

Last night, Animal Planet ?followed-up its science fictional, but photorealistic, ?Mermaids: the body found,? with ?Mermaids: The New Evidence.? The new mer-mentary asks us to keep on believing that mermaids are among us, if only through the some very fishy video.

Last year when the first ?documentary? came out in May, I was filling in as an editor at a local daily newspaper and had to call someone in a city office here for comment on a story about the how the broadcast was impacting tourism.

Norfolk is known as The Mermaid City because our city symbol is the mermaid and more than 300, 8-foot-long, 4-foot high, mermaid sculptures dot the landscape. More mermaid sculptures, mostly by local Artist Georgia Mason, are added to our streets by private collectors and businesses every year.

To my eternal shock, the city official asked to ?go off the record? asking me, ?Are mermaids really real? I swear never to tell another living soul, but I need to know because I?ve always believed and I know your books explain everything about them. I know you lived on a sailboat. You must know the truth.?

I suppose now is as good a time as any to admit to being the one behind Merwiki?which I began with my youngest son immediately after the first Animal Planet mockumentary and the NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) response debunking our girls came to light. The site regularly generates e-mail questions from around the globe on the legitimacy, history, and physicality of mermaids. I try to answer as many as I can each week.

Any time I am asked if mermaids are real, I tell the same story; and when that fails, I quote Shel Silverstein.

Heather Bauer, RD, CDN: Top 5 Reasons to Steer Clear of GMOs

Get Healthy Living Alerts:

We have all heard the term "GMO" fly around the food industry lately, but what does it actually mean? GMO stands for "genetically modified organisms." These are plants and animals that have been created by having their DNA modified in a lab. So why are we consuming these Frankenstein-like organisms? GMO's have been created for many reasons, including longer shelf life, resistance to weed killers and resistance to insects. Although this may not sound all bad, the changing of a product's DNA may cause changes to levels of nutrients that may be important for our health. Many new organizations, including the Non-GMO Project, are on a mission to preserve non-GMO products, and increase the awareness through food labeling. Want to be part of the non-GMO bandwagon? Here are my top five reasons to let go of GMOs.

1. You may not even know you're consuming it. Are you ready for this shocker? In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80 percent of conventional processed food. It can be hard to keep on top of what food ingredients are at risk of being a GMO, because they are constantly changing. Genetically-altered ingredients may also be hiding in fruits and vegetables. More markets are beginning to recognize this growing issue, one in particular being Whole Foods. Whole Foods has been supporting the Non-GMO project and even lists all of their safe products on their website.

2. It is healthier for the whole family. Shopping organic is a great step toward ensuring that your family eats the healthiest foods possible. The challenge is that although GMOs are not recommended for the National Organic Program, it also does not require GMO testing. For your best bet in making sure you are selecting the best, healthiest and safest products and ingredients for you and your family, it is best to choose products that are certified organic and Non-GMO Project verified.

3. There are plenty of other options. Although it may be hard to always know which fruits and vegetable products are non-GMO, by choosing other products that are labeled with the non-GMO seal, you can begin to change the way you eat. A great brand I am loving these days is Way Better Snacks. These delicious chips made from sprouted grains are not only Non-GMO verified, but are high in omega-3s and other vital nutrients. Another great brand that you may have heard of is Larabar. A favorite snack of mine, all Larabar products are non-GMO and organic. By choosing to purchase foods that have been properly labeled as non-GMO, we are helping to keep these products on our stores shelves.

4. Use your green thumb. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is a great way to avoid GMOs. Make sure to check the label on the seeds you choose, as well. If the package is not labeled, it is best to assume that the seed or plant has been genetically modified.

5. Shop the local green markets. Farmers' markets are a great way to get fresh produce from small local farms. Checking out these markets will give you a chance to talk directly with the farmers themselves, and find out exactly where the produce is coming from.

Pentagon report: Chinese hackers accessed F-35B and other advanced US weapons systems

Pentagon report China hacked F35B and other advanced US weapons systems

Many of the Pentagon's most advanced weapon systems -- including the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and PAC-3 Patriot missile system -- were compromised by Chinese hackers, according to a classified document obtained by the Washington Post. The list of weapons was part of an earlier DoD report condemning Chinese cyber-espionage activities, but had been confidential until now. Other systems hacked are said to include the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), the Navy's Aegis ballistic-missile defense system, the F/A-18 fighter, V-22 Osprey and the Littoral Combat Ship used for shore patrol. Many of these form the foundation of defense systems from Europe to the Persian Gulf -- and their breach goes a long way towards explaining Washington's unprecedented dressing-down of China.

Outdoor Power with Home Depot | Honea Express

Boys Hose

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Home Depot.

We rent, which means there is a fine line between the amount of work and investment we want to put into our yard and how frowzy we are willing to let it get. Our landlord, unfortunately, has no qualms about the latter, and aside from an occasional mowing we are generally on our own.

Luckily, my family enjoys a good project and working with our hands?meaning we hardly had to bribe the kids at all. It?s that fun!

Boys at Work

Early photographic evidence of the boys working on stuff.

We decided that something we could do together, and for very little money, was to build some mounted flower beds on the end of the house and fill the patch of dirt and weeds that pass as desert chic with a sustainable garden and/or salad bar for the many rabbits currently residing in the area.

unkept house

Exhibit A: The ugly end of the house.

planting garden

This is where the bunnies will brunch.

However, a lingering winter and a cool spring coupled with busy schedules and another excuse for laziness kept us from maintaining the property as well as we should have, and in our absence the wildlife has flourished. Also, grime. The place is filthy, and before we can build it up we need to wash it down. Hence my looking for outdoor power equipment, specifically a hot water pressure washer at my local Home Depot?apparently a pressure washer hose packs more punch than the garden variety we have curled up in the corner (possible exceptions include top photo). Who knew?

This just in, Home Depot does not mess around when it comes to outdoor power. For instance, the DEWALT Pro Pressure Washers (4,200 psi pictured) look like they could really leave a mark? I mean clean really well!

Dewalt power washer

Step one of project ?Pretty It Up? is looking for a pressure washer rental (or something affordable enough to buy). Step two is making it happen. Stay tuned, true believers, and #DigIn!

Angelina Jolie's Aunt Debbie Loses Battle with Breast Cancer ...

Angelina Jolie?s Aunt Debbie has passed away after a battle with breast cancer, her Uncle Ron Martin tells E! News.

The news comes just weeks after the 37-year-old actress shared her brave decision to have a preventative double mastectomy to lower her risk for the disease. Debbie is the sister of Angie?s late mother Marcheline Bertrand, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007.

?Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day,? Ron said. ?They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice.?

?We have seen Angelina a number of times since Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer and Debbie and I were both very proud of her recent decision to have the double mastectomy and to do everything she can to keep her family from having to go through what we?ve been through,? he continued. ?Angelina?s father Jon Voight has also been tremendously supportive?he came down to see Debbie last Sunday and spent the whole day, talking with her and sharing his love and I know Debbie really enjoyed seeing him and talking with him.?

Obama calls Oklahoma tornado's toll 'hard to comprehend'

By Jeff Mason

MOORE, Oklahoma (Reuters) - Standing by a pile of debris that once was an elementary school, President Barack Obama on Sunday called the destruction last week's tornado wrought in Moore, Oklahoma, "hard to comprehend" and vowed to provide long-term federal help in rebuilding.

The tornado, rated at the top of a five-step scale used to measure the destructive power of twisters, killed 24 people - including seven children at the school site Obama visited. It ripped a 17-mile-long (27-km-long) corridor of destruction through the suburb of Oklahoma City, flattening entire blocks of homes, two schools and a hospital.

"Obviously the damage here is pretty hard to comprehend," Obama said, standing on a block where piles of boards, bricks and cinder blocks that used to be buildings and houses lined the side of the street. Rare items that survived the disaster - a television set, a pink baby carriage - stood in contrast to the wreckage.

The visit to the disaster-shaken town was one in a series of responses Obama has made in recent months to tragedies, including the Boston Marathon bombings last month; a December mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut; and the destruction that Superstorm Sandy caused along the Jersey Shore in October.

"Whenever I come to an area that has been devastated by some natural disaster like this, I want to make sure that everyone understands that I am speaking on behalf of the entire country," said Obama, flanked by officials including Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin. "Everywhere, fellow Americans are praying with you, they're thinking about you and they want to help. And I'm just a messenger here letting you know that you are not alone."

Cars with their bodies dented and windows smashed lay under debris or twisted on their sides. Rising above the wasteland were at least three American flags that had been attached to the rubble, waving in the wind.

Caleb Sloan, 24, who lost his home in the storm, said Obama's words gave him hope that help would be forthcoming.

"He has no choice but to live by his word," Sloan said. "I hope and pray and think he will keep his promises."

SPATE OF STORMS

The May 20 tornado in Moore was the most powerful of a spate of 76 twisters that touched down in 10 states from May 18 through May 20, causing an estimated $2 billion to $5 billion in insured losses, according to disaster-modeling company Eqecat.

The Moore tornado, the deadliest such windstorm to hit the United States in two years, also injured 377 people.

While assuring that residents of the 1,200 homes the storm destroyed would receive extended federal help, Obama also urged lawmakers to maintain funding for the training and equipment that emergency responders rely on in the aftermath of disasters.

"We can't shortchange that kind of ongoing disaster response, we can't just wait until the disaster happens," Obama said. "That's how, in part, we're able to save a lot of lives."

After the president left, the town held its own memorial service at First Baptist Church of Moore that included a performance by the Oklahoma Strong Children's Choir, made up of Moore school children who were affected by Monday's storm.

Americans gather to honor fallen service members

ATLANTA (AP) ? Americans planned to gather at cemeteries, memorials and monuments nationwide to honor fallen military service members on Memorial Day, at a time when combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindles.

President Barack Obama was expected to lay a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington. Earlier in the morning, he and first lady Michelle Obama planned to host a breakfast at the White House with "Gold Star" families of service members who have been killed.

In one of several ceremonies honoring Americans killed in Afghanistan, the city of South Sioux City, Neb., planned to unveil a statue honoring Navy Petty Officer 1st Class John Douangdara, a dog handler for the SEALs killed in a 2011 helicopter crash. His service dog was also killed in the crash and is memorialized beside him in the statue.

At the American Airpower Museum on Long Island, N.Y., a program was planned to honor Women Air Service Pilots, or WASPs, who tested and ferried completed aircraft from factories to bases during World War II. Thirty-eight died during the war, including Alice Lovejoy of Scarsdale, N.Y., who was killed on Sept. 13, 1944, in a midair collision over Texas.

"It's very important that we recognize not only their contribution to American history, but women's history," said Julia Lauria-Blum, curator of the WASP exhibit at the museum. "These women really blazed a path; they were pioneers for women's aviation. And most important, they gave their lives serving their country and must be honored like anyone else on Memorial Day."

Another wreath-laying ceremony was planned at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park is a tribute to President Roosevelt's famous speech calling for all people to enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

The holiday weekend also marked the traditional start of the U.S. vacation season. AAA, one of the nation's largest leisure travel agencies, expected 31.2 million Americans to hit the road over the weekend, virtually the same number as last year. Gas prices were about the same as last year, up 1 cent to a national average of $3.65 a gallon Friday.

Morgan Levy: The Age of Ignorance

Our society today has become ignorant of many things: artificiality, each other, but also of the true meaning of certain holidays. I wake up today to an Instagram feed covered in beach pictures and Facebook status upon status about vacation destinations, yet no mention of why we celebrate Memorial Day.

What happened to a time when Memorial Day was about honoring our veterans? How did we regress to Memorial Day being just a summer kickoff and socially acceptable time to begin donning light-colored clothing? Today I have seen more pictures of white outfits and beach vacations than mentions of our veterans.

In the age of social media, we have become very artificial. Instagram is the opportunity to show off your "food porn," "artsy" surroundings, and expensive possessions. Twitter is the perfect avenue to update others on your fabulous life. Facebook the place to brag about your recent college acceptance or any other milestone.

Even getting asked to prom, an intimate moment in every high schoolers' life, is now accompanied by a photographing friend who will immediately post the coveted shot on any and all forms of social media. Of course, these prom pictures will always get at least 100 likes, because how could you not like somebody's prom proposal picture?

On Facebook profile pictures have become a competition for "likes." Quite often, girls get dolled up in their cutest outfits, styled hair and makeup to have a photo-shoot with their friends in order to take the perfect shot. Following this, the picture is over edited in order to make it "artsy." Once posted on Facebook, the picture is shared by the girl's friends who all write "like the pic not the link." This comical series of events are now commonplace, showing how all we care about is the verification that we are beautiful or artistic.

Rarely do I see a candid picture, one where somebody is laughing with their friends, just hanging out with their siblings, cuddling with their dog, or doing something funny. Vibrant personality shots have vanished in favor of a quest for beauty. Instagram is not only a virtual beauty pageant, but also a hub of materialism. A shopping trip warrants a picture showing off new purchases. Whether it is Chanel Espadrilles, a Rebecca Minkoff bag, or a Marc Jacobs phone case, it's instinctive to let others know we bought it.

Nobody's perfect, I get that wholeheartedly. My Facebook pictures are edited, I recently Instagrammed a picture of my new Cambridge Satchel Company bag, but the more concerning issue is that our artificial lifestyles have replaced days that should be celebrated properly.

Enjoy your day at the beach, bust out those white jeans, but take a moment to reflect. Think about those who fight for our nation, those who keep America the land of the free and the home of the brave, maybe even Instagram a picture thanking our veterans. Every bit of caring counts, keeping us from becoming too fake.

We need to modify our ways before all that is real has been replaced by artificiality.

(AP) ? Serena Williams won her opening match at the French Open, and then achieved a career breakthrough by speaking French to the crowd for the first time.

"'I'm a beginner," Williams said ? referring to her French, not tennis.

Her play spoke volumes Sunday. Williams returned to the red clay that tripped her up in the first round a year ago, channeled any lingering frustration into her overpowering strokes and drubbed Anna Tatishvili 6-0, 6-1.

Also advancing on a chilly, gray first day of play were Sara Errani, the 2012 runner-up to Maria Sharapova, and 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic.

Williams lost her opening match at a Grand Slam tournament for the only time in her career a year ago, when she was beaten by France's Virginie Razzano. That was the most shocking in a succession of losses for Williams at Roland Garros, where she hasn't won the title since 2002 and hasn't reached the semifinals since 2003.

Determined to avoid another bad start, Williams won the first nine games, and 30 of the first 37 points. There was no letup from there, and she was still pumping her fist and shouting "Come on!" a game from the finish.

Williams won 56 of 78 points, including 28 of 33 on her serve, and hit eight aces. She maintained a stern expression throughout the match, and allowed herself only a brief smile when Tatishvili pushed a forehand wide on match point.

Williams, who keeps an apartment in Paris, was then interviewed on center court and spoke French with only a slight accent.

"I think I am French because I have a flat here," she said. "I love Paris."

She'll face tougher competition in the rounds to come ? Tatishvili fell to 2-11 this year and 0-3 at the French Open.

Play began with the temperature in the mid-50s (13 C), and an hour into the tournament, Errani was into the second round. The tenacious Italian beat Arantxa Rus 6-1, 6-2 in the opening match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Errani reached a Grand Slam final for the first time a year ago at Roland Garros.

"Last year was an unbelievable tournament, the best tournament of my life," Errani said. "But I don't want to think about that. I just want to come here and play another tournament. I try to concentrate on my tennis, not too much about last year."

Now ranked a career-best No. 5, Errani dominated Rus from the baseline and won four games at love. Rus double-faulted seven times and lost her 13th consecutive match on the WTA Tour.

Ivanovic, seeded 14th, beat Petra Martic 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Ivanovic improved to 30-4 in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.

In men's play, No. 14 Milos Raonic hit 16 aces, won 32 points at the net and defeated Xavier Malisse, 6-2, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Malisse, ranked 56th, fell to 0-5 this year on clay.

Former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, playing in his 13th French Open, lost a seesaw marathon against No. 15-seeded Gilles Simon, 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5. Simon overcame a two-set deficit to win for the first time in his career despite blowing a 5-love lead in the final set.

No. 23 Kevin Anderson beat lucky loser Illya Marchenko 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

Investing in a Brighter Future | Care2 Healthy Living

In the U.S., our energy system and our financial system have always run in tandem.

The first business lit with incandescent bulbs was J.P. Morgan?s original financial company, located at 23 Wall Street. None other than Thomas Edison himself was on hand to flip the switch. Fast-forward to the present and it?s no coincidence that a few major interests dominate both the financial and the energy industries. The sheer scale of our energy system?billion dollar coal plants, globe-spanning supply chains?requires massive banks. The profits from our energy system, in turn, help make our biggest banks even bigger.

Obviously, this situation isn?t working out so well for most of us. Our pension funds might provide for our personal futures, but they?re harming the futures of our children, our communities, and our planet. Our places of worship and universities channel their endowments to investments that no religious leader or ethics professor would ever recommend. Meanwhile, because our financing institutions are structured to make loans to a few large energy projects, there?s a major financing shortfall for the many smaller, distributed energy projects we really need.

The point is: if we want a new, clean energy system, we?re going to have to build a new financial system.

The divestment movement is one amazing step in the right direction. But after divestment comes the equally challenging work of reinvestment. Our major financial institutions are going to continue to favor big loans for big energy projects. Opening up new pathways of investment for things like wind, solar, or energy efficiency?investments that we can move our money into as we get out of fossil fuels?is a major challenge of our time.

The graphic below shows how one model is faring. At Mosaic, we?re currently in the process of raising funds for the largest solar project loan we?ve ever offered. So far, 823 investors from 42 states have put over $1M to finance a project that will produce enough solar energy to power 50 American homes every year.

Mosaic is just one of the many new investment models we?ll need to get to a brighter future. But the graphic below does give some sense of what the new energy-finance system might look like. Call it distributed finance for distributed energy. Or, call it people power.

Michael Parks is a Blog Editor at Mosaic, a solar financing marketplace, and a Masters graduate of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He believes giving people a way to invest in solar power is the best way to get them to vote for it.

UFC 160: KJ Noons on Cerrone, jitters, cutting weight, fatherhood ...

UFC lightweight prospect, KJ Noons discusses his upcoming first fight in the octagon against Donald Cerrone, fatherhood, cutting weight, and his disappointing loss to Ryan Couture.

KJ Noons has been talking with his fists, either in a cage or in a ring, for more than a decade. A veteran of kickboxing, boxing and mixed martial arts, his crossover into the UFC is the last of the bigger names to come from the Strikeforce roster. Coming off a ridiculously controversial decision loss to Ryan Couture, Noons relishes the idea of being the underdog, and hopes to find better footing inside the octagon.

He'll not be met with an easy task, though. Donald Cerrone stands ready to try to get his own career back on track, and presents a serious challenge to most anyone in the UFC's lightweight division. I spoke with KJ recently, and got his thoughts on this latest battle he'll be embroiled in at UFC 160. Here's what he had to say:

Cutting Weight

You know what? It's actually getting easier as I get older. I've changed my diet and eating habits. I'm not eating like a slob like I used to [laughs]. When I was younger, I used to eat like a slob and cut the weight in one day. Now, my whole lifestyle has changed and I'm eating better, so the weight cut is really not that bad at all. It's actually easier. You've just got to stay on top of it.

Moving Past the Controversial Loss to Ryan Couture

Yeah, it was unpleasant. There were a few things - you had to win to get into the UFC, that was number one. Number two, I only get half a paycheck. I couldn't really do anything about it, and they could not overturn it, so I had to dust myself off and get ready for the next fight. The UFC didn't look at it as a loss, so they brought me in and gave me a great first opponent. The fans knew I won, so I wasn't too discouraged by the situation. It's all good.

2.5 to 1 Underdog

I don't really mind. I actually like being the underdog. If those are the odds, then whoever makes the odds, if they're so confident, then they should bet the money on it, and see what happens on fight night.

UFC Jitters

I think I'll be okay. I've been the main event in MMA a few times and had almost 30 pro fights between boxing and kickboxing. I'm pretty confident that if I am nervous or have butterflies, and I probably will have butterflies, I'll be able to turn that into energy and be able to put it towards the fight.

Donald Cerrone

He's a well rounded fighter. I think he's going to try a little bit of everything, so I trained for everything. There will be stand-up in there for all the fans. It's still an MMA fight, though. We train for the fight to go anywhere, and I'm ready for it to go anywhere.

I don't know exactly where in the Top 10 I would belong, but after I beat him, I definitely think I deserve to be somewhere in that range.

Fatherhood

It totally makes you more motivated to be successful. It also makes you a lot more grounded. You're no longer living the single life, going out partying it up or anything like that. You're sitting at home, taking care of the family, chilling, training and getting ready for the fights. It's really relaxing, if anything.

Exciting Fighters

Truthfully, I just think it's something you're born with. Either you've got it or you don't. I train hard - of course I train hard, but you've got a lot of guys that train hard that don't go for the finishes or try to make their fights more exciting, you know what I mean.

You can follow KJ via his Twitter account, @kjnoons
