Washington Capitals Will Have Success With Brooks Laich As Second Line Center

The?Washington Capitals?have been pretty silent for the most part. Which means that the front office is content to let?Adam Oates?have at least one more year, and one with a full season, with the group that he took over in the 2013 season. There are plenty of pros and cons that come along with that.

The Capitals caught fire in the second half of the season and grabbed a division title, not long after getting off to a miserable start to the year. But what they did, they did with?Mike Ribeiro?as a second line center and he had a fantastic year. The same can?t be said heading into the new year.

Ribeiro has parted ways with the Capitals since free agency began, despite his desire to return. Which means that the Caps will be forced to find an option to replace him in the middle of that second line. That search has apparently already ended, as?Brooks Laich?will take over in the middle.

Laich spent pretty much all of the 2013 season on the shelf with an injury, appearing in only nine games, finishing the year with four points, including a goal. It?s pretty clear that from a pure offensive skill standpoint, that second line center role could take a bit of a step back with Laich in there.

Ribeiro is among the best playmakers in the game. Laich is perfectly capable, but doesn?t have that skill. Still, the Capitals will be just fine with Laich in the middle there, as long as he?s healthy. He?s a three-time 20-goal scorer and has finished with at least 30 assists three time in his career.

Laich obviously is not the talent that Ribeiro is from a pure offensive standpoint. But in his own way, he?ll be successful in the middle of the second unit. He brings size to the middle, he?s better in the faceoff circle, and he can play the physical game. He won?t put up outlandish numbers, but the Capitals will be just fine with Brooks Laich instead of Mike Ribeiro.

Nuclear plant scrapped after public outcry in South China

A planned facility to process nuclear fuel in Jiangmen of South China's Guangdong province has been canceled, following opposition by a majority of residents, the local government said on Saturday.

The 229-hectare Longwan Industrial Park project, which had been scheduled in Heshan, a county-level city in Jiangmen of the Pearl River Delta region, would have featured facilities for uranium conversion, enrichment and manufacturing of nuclear fuel equipment, sources with the government said.

However, the project has met criticism from local residents since authorities publicised a risk-stability assessment report about the industrial park on July 4.

Many residents "took a walk" on streets in protest against the project on Friday, holding banners and wearing T-shirts with slogans calling to halt construction of the planned facility, Xinhua News Agency reported.

"We pay respect to the residents' opinion and will not apply for approval for the project," Wu Yuxiong, mayor of Heshan, said at the news conference on Saturday.

Nuclear plant scrapped

The project was owned by China National Nuclear Corporation, the main body of the national nuclear technology industry. The company did not comment on Saturday about the suspension.

The project, the first industrial park planned in South China for nuclear fuel production, was designed with an investment of up to 37 billion yuan (US$6.02 billion).

It would have supplied power plants in Guangdong and neighboring Fujian province, with designed capacity of 1,000 tons of uranium in 2020.

Protestors said they were upset because the planned site is only 30 kilometers away from the heart of the city.

"We don't need such a project to boost the economy. Instead, we need a healthy living environment," said a resident surnamed Huang.

The cancellation of the plant came after China shook off concerns over nuclear safety after the Fukushima disaster in Japan, and announced plans to increase the installed nuclear power generation capacity in the following years.

China's electricity generated by nuclear power plants accounted for only 1.2 per cent of the total electricity in 2012, sources told Xinhua. The plan has been to increase that to 5 per cent by 2020.

Afghan paradox concerns India and Pakistan equally

Secretary of State John Kerry made a conscious effort to convince India that the process of ?reconciliation? the Obama Administration initiated with the Taliban did not constitute surrender to Taliban ambitions by a US tired of its expensive ?War on Terror? after the attacks on New York and Washington on 9/11. New Delhi listened, but made it clear that it was concerned by shifts in American policies, which no longer required the Taliban to renounce violence, accept the Afghan Constitution and end links with terror groups like the al-Qaeda and its affiliates, before ?reconciliation? in Afghanistan could proceed. President Karzai had earlier demanded the US suspend the ?reconciliation? process, after the Taliban opened its office in Qatar.

President Obama evidently intends to go down in history as the first African-American President, who ended expensive military expeditions in Iraq and Afghanistan and set the US economy on a new path of growth and prosperity. With discoveries of vast resources of shale oil and gas, the US will soon become the largest producer of oil in the world and a major exporter of gas. With the housing and car industries in the US reviving, Obama intends to restore the US as a leading industrial power, bequeathing a legacy of peace and prosperity. At the same time, he realises that he cannot afford to totally withdraw from Afghanistan, as the Taliban still retains close links with international terrorist groups from Pakistan and elsewhere, which can stage more 9/11-style terrorist attacks on the US.

Dr Manmohan Singh is naturally concerned that if ?reconciliation? with the Taliban involves moves that lead to the Taliban taking control of part or the whole of Afghanistan, with backing from the ISI, Afghan territory will once again become? a haven for anti-India terrorism. The Taliban have, after all, close links with and provided haven to terrorists from the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen and even informed former ISI Chief General Ziauddin that they were prepared to provide thousands of ?volunteers? for ?jihad? in Kashmir. They have, moreover, attacked Indian diplomatic missions in Kabul and Kandahar and targeted and kidnapped Indian workers and engineers in Afghanistan. Nawaz Sharif has his own priorities and worries. He realises that while his primary objective of focusing on economic recovery will be adversely affected by policies that promote radicalism and terrorism, he may not be able to prevent his military establishment from arming and training the Taliban.

There has been a substantive change in the US approach to relations with Pakistan after Hillary Clinton relinquished office as Secretary of State and was replaced by Kerry. Clinton did not mince words in condemning Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, or hesitate to offer a $10-million reward for assistance in bringing Hafiz Mohammed Saeed to justice. She firmly believed in a policy of ?carrot and stick? in dealing with Pakistan. Kerry, on the other hand, acts as a virtual apologist for terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. Instead of focusing on Pakistani policies that have led to huge American casualties in Afghanistan, Kerry praises the ?sacrifices? made by Pakistan during the ?War on Terror? and even seeks to ignore the role of the Pakistan army in providing haven to Osama bin Laden, his family and entourage for over six years in the Abbotabad cantonment.

It remains to be seen how American policies play out in Afghanistan, where they have virtually ended all combat operations. Will the US stay the course in arming and training the Afghan National Security Forces to enable them to withstand ISI-backed Taliban attacks? Will Nawaz Sharif be able to bring semblance of moderation and sanity in the ISI?s fondness for ?jihadi? terrorism? We will perhaps get a better understanding of all this when Singh meets Sharif and Obama in September.

Union welcome Chivas USA to PPL

Chester, PA (My Sportsbook) - The Philadelphia Union will aim to get back on the winning track on home soil on Friday as the club welcomes Chivas USA to PPL Park.

Coming off a difficult two-game road trip to Salt Lake City and Houston which netted the Union one point of a possible six, three points at home against a struggling Chivas side are a must for John Hackworth's club if it wants to keep pace in the crowded Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia looked to have three points in the bag on July 3 against Real Salt Lake as it held a 2-1 lead deep into stoppage time, but an ill-advised handball in the box led to Javier Morales converting a penalty kick to save a point for the hosts.

Three days later, an exhausted and depleted Union allowed a 59th-minute goal to Ricardo Clark, which propelled the Dynamo to a much-needed victory at BBVA Compass Stadium.

"We didn't defend collectively as a group and we leave a guy open inside the box, and you can't do that at this level," Union head coach John Hackworth said. "Credit to Houston, they were pushing the whole game; they were a team that was really trying to get on the board. To their credit, they broke through in the second half."

But the Union remain confident despite some tough results over the past few games.

"We have a good week of training and just look ahead," forward Conor Casey said. "And we're in a good place right now as a team. We have dropped some points these last couple of games, but we're in the middle of the season now, and this is what really counts and that's what's going to separate us."

Chivas USA, meanwhile, comes into Friday's tilt struggling mightily, having not won a league match since March 30.

Last time out, the Goats did well to take the lead in Quebec against the East- leading Montreal Impact, as a 55th-minute tally by Eric Avila made it 1-0 for the visitors.

But they were unable to hold onto the lead as a clumsy challenge on Montreal's Sanna Nyassi by Mario de Luna result in a penalty kick 11 minutes from time.

Patrice Bernier lined up the spot kick and buried it to save a point for Montreal, extending the Goats' winless run to 13 consecutive matches.

"We went on the road and we played two great teams in their home. To come away with a point is very accomplishing for us," Avila said. "With the momentum from Dallas, we came in here and we played as a team and we stayed more composed and it helped the team through the game."

In five all-time meetings with Chivas, Philadelphia has never lost, posting a 3-0-2 record, including a 1-0 win at the Home Depot Center last season courtesy of a goal from Freddy Adu.
