Wheelchair-bound Florida man catches 250-pound shark

VILANO BEACH, Fla. -

A wheelchair-bound man with no legs is celebrating after catching an 8 foot, 250-pound shark off the North Fla. coast.

The St. Augustine Record reports that Matt Sechrist, a 19-year-old student from Clay County, reeled in the lemon shark while sitting in his wheelchair on Vilano Beach.

A family friend dropped bait off the coast, then Sechrist put the brakes on his wheelchair and strapped on a fighting harness.

Friends and family members held the chair in place while Sechrist struggled to catch the shark.

After an hour, the shark tired and Sechrist reeled it in. The group took photos, revived the shark and released it into the ocean.

Sechrist starts college this week to pursue a major in human performance, so he can train other wheelchair-bound athletes.

Is Yahoo Stock Deal Insider Trading? - Business Insider

Some startling news from Yahoo this morning...

The company is buying $1.1 billion worth of its stock from its largest investor, Third Point, and three of the company's most important directors--including Third Point's Dan Loeb--are quitting?the board.

This is big news for Yahoo! from a fundamental perspective. The three board members who are resigning, activist investor Dan Loeb, media consultant Michael Wolf, and turnaround expert Harry Wilson, have made a major contribution to Yahoo's turnaround and stock price resurrection over the past two years.

This also seems like big news from another perspective:

It seems like the very definition of insider trading.

How?

Well, sometime prior to the open of the stock market this morning, three of Yahoo's most important board members decided to resign.

And, sometime prior to the open of the stock this morning--before the board-member resignations were made public--Yahoo's largest shareholder, which knew about the resignations, dumped $1.1 billion of stock.

The information that three important board members are quitting is highly material information--information that almost any reasonable investor would want to know when considering a Yahoo trade. Trading while in possession of material non-public information, meanwhile, is insider trading.

Given that Yahoo's three most important board members just quit, it's not surprising to see Yahoo's stock down 5% this morning. It's actually surprising to me that it's not down more than that.

Third Point and Yahoo obviously knew that three of Yahoo's board members were about to quit when they agreed to the terms of the deal in which Yahoo will buy 40 million shares of its stock from Third Point.

Third Point and Yahoo, however, did not wait to agree on a price for this trade until after the news about the board member resignations had been made public.?

Third Point and Yahoo did not, for example, wait until the close of trading today, when Yahoo's stock price will presumably reflect the market's assessment of the news that Yahoo's three most important board members have just quit.

Instead, Yahoo and Third Point priced their transaction based on Yahoo's closing price on Friday--before the news about the directors quitting was made public.

So Third Point is getting the pre-resignation price for its stock, while knowing about the upcoming board member resignations. And the rest of us Joe Schmo Yahoo shareholders, who didn't know about the resignations, are now getting the post-resignation price.

Again, the definition of "insider trading" is trading while in possession of material non-public information.

It would be extremely hard to argue that the sudden and unexpected resignation of three of Yahoo's most important directors is not material non-public information.

And it would be impossible to argue that Third Point and Yahoo did not trade while in possession of this information.

So, how is this not insider trading?

I don't mean to be dense or rude here. ?And I'm also not a lawyer. So maybe there's some exception to insider trading laws that allows insider deals like this to happen.

To be clear, I'm also not objecting to big private block trades. Those happen all the time. (In most cases, though, they happen at a discount to the prevailing market price, to account for the likely impact of that amount of stock changing hands on the market price. This one, I note, did not happen at a discount.)

And, very importantly, these big private block trades also do not happen when both parties--and no one else--are in possession of?highly material non-public information, such as the resignation of three key directors.

I am sure that this deal was lawyered out the wazoo. So I'm sure there's some innocent explanation.

But until I hear that explanation, I will be scratching my head.

A source familiar with Third Point's view of this trade says that it was legal because the stock was sold to Yahoo, not the public. Yahoo was in possession of the same information as Third Point, the source says, so there was no information on one side that was not known to the other side.

And I certainly see that.

As a Yahoo shareholder, I'm a bit annoyed that Yahoo didn't insist on getting a modest discount to the trading price in exchange for buying such a big block of stock, as I would have expected in this scenario. But I'm not arguing that Yahoo got shafted by being sold stock while not being in possession of the information on the other side of the trade.

The folks I'm frustrated on behalf of are Yahoo's other shareholders, who didn't sell, and who didn't know about this material non-public information that both Yahoo and Third Point knew about when they traded at that juicy $29+ price on Friday.

A a Yahoo shareholder who was/is thinking of selling his stock, for example, I can tell you that I sure would have liked to have known on Friday afternoon that Yahoo's three most important board members were about to announce that they were quitting. That information might have made a difference to me when I was considering selling my stock (which, as it happened, I actually was doing on Friday afternoon. I didn't sell.) And I certainly feel like a bit of a sucker this morning, now that I have learned that Yahoo's smartest shareholder, Dan Loeb, unloaded $1.1 billion of his stock on Friday, while knowing what I was I blissfully clueless about all weekend.

DISCLAIMER: I am absurdly conflicted here. First, I'm a Yahoo shareholder. For better and worse, I've owned the stock since 1998. (I have been thinking of selling it recently, in part because I'm sick of having to explain that I'm a Yahoo shareholder when I write or talk about the company. It looks like Friday might have been a good time to sell.) Second, I work for Yahoo: I'm a host of a Yahoo Finance video show called Daily Ticker. Third, I have friends and acquaintances at several companies involved in this transaction and many more companies that might have been involved. Basically, I have so many conflicts and potential conflicts with respect to this story that I could spend the rest of the day describing them....

BYU football video: As fall camp approaches, KSL-TV previews the Cougars' season

KSL: BYU 2013 college football preview

Fall camp for the BYU Cougars is two weeks away. As football season nears, the hype and anticipation of another college football campaign is beginning to approach fever pitch.

KSL SportsBeat, a partner of Deseret News Sports, is in the middle of preseason analysis of Utah's three major FBS programs. Every weekend leading up to fall camp, KSL SportsBeat is producing a season preview for BYU, Utah and Utah State, analyzing each team's talent, prospects, schedule and weaknesses in anticipation for the beginning of the season.

The first of these three previews focused on BYU and its third independent campaign. The schedule is arguably the toughest in school history, but those within the program feel the Cougars are up to the challenge.

KSL SportsBeat's season previews for the University of Utah and for Utah State will come over the next two weeks.

Imogen Heap: Hide And Seek

I've always liked this song. It's made of layered voice tracks all sung by Imogen Heap and backed up with some keyboard synth shenanigans. Of course, we all remember it for the bridge aka the "mmm watcha say" portion, which was apparently featured prominently in the climactic scene of The OC series finale. I wouldn't know because I never watched The OC, except that then SNL made a hilarious Digital Short spoofing The OC and prominently featuring some "mmm watcha say"s. Good stuff. New pictures leak comparing Apple iPhone Lite and Apple iPhone 5

1. JojoGo101 posted on yesterday, 23:54 0

I'm really curious about the specs they put on this cheaper model.

8. Berzerk000 posted on 2 hours ago 0

It has to be at least that of the iPhone 4S but with 1 GB of RAM, or else it will fail.

9. Nathan_ingx posted on 2 hours ago 0

Nada, i don't iPhone lite will have 1GB RAM...
That will kill iPhone 4(S) customers.

13. Berzerk000 posted on 1 hour ago 1

But iOS 7 needs 1 GB of RAM now because it finally supports multitasking, even Apple knows that. If they put less than that, then they are intentionally putting a drawback on their users.

11. KingKurogiii posted on 1 hour ago 0

it would have to be more like the 5 to be able to support LTE in the "Apple Proper" way and also i think an iPhone "Lite" really messes with Apple's model of just being able to move down the last gen iPhone to the mid range category which i think worked really well for them however this could work if this ends up just being an inexpensively built iPhone 5. so then they could fill the mid range category with both this and the 5 but they'll be able to offer trade-offs for each other, price vs. quality without specs having to be thrown in. if they were the Lite would probably lose considering how cheap you can get an iPhone 5 nowadays.

12. thelegend6657 posted on 1 hour ago 0

I think iPhone lite is 4S replacement in the mid range world

14. Berzerk000 posted on 1 hour ago 0

I didn't like how the previous gen iPhone was their mid range model, because after 1 or 2 software updates they are severely behind in features compared to the newest generation products. It's a big middle finger to those who buy previous gen devices. If Apple can make a mid range device alongside their flagship while giving it the same software features, that would be a much better deal for people who can't buy the high end model.

Comparing the iPhone Lite with the iPhone 5.

It's like comparing a mustard flavored soap with a smartphone.

6. wendygarett posted on 2 hours ago 3

+1 for the mustard flavored soup :)

7. TripnCNT posted on 2 hours ago 0

I don't understand why apple would even consider making an iphone with that cheap aesthetic material, unless of course it is more likely to be aimed at 3rd world countries.

10. mas11 posted on 1 hour ago 0

With all of these leaks I'm actually starting to believe a 4.3" iPhone is possible. They will use the iPhone lite to maintain their one-handed usability stance and market the 5S as the premium device.

15. KingKurogiii posted on 53 min ago 0

they won't change the screen size again for a long while.
third party developers for Apple products are still wheeling off of the bump to 4.0".

16. DONUT posted on 48 min ago 0

i know its suppose to be a cheaper iPhone but sheesh that cover looks beyond cheap

Woman dies in fall from giant Texas roller coaster

Patrons leave Six Flags Over Texas park as the Texas Giant roller coaster was shut down after an adult woman fell to her death Friday, July 19, 2013 in Arlington, Texas. ARLINGTON, Texas ? Investigators will try to determine Saturday if a woman who died while riding a roller coaster at a Six Flags amusement park in North Texas fell from the ride dubbed the tallest steel-hybrid coaster in the world after not being properly secured by staff, as some witnesses accounts contend.

The accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. Park spokeswoman Sharon Parker confirmed that a woman died while riding the Texas Giant roller coaster but did not specify how she was killed. Witnesses told local media outlets that the woman fell.

"She goes up like this. Then when it drops to come down, that's when it (the safety bar) released and she just tumbled," Carmen Brown of Arlington told The Dallas Morning News. Brown said she was waiting in line to get on the ride when the accident happened.

Brown said she also witnessed the woman being strapped into the ride.

"They didn't secure her right. One of the employees from the park ? one of the ladies ? she asked her to click her more than once, and they were like, 'As long you heard it click, you're OK.' Everybody else is like, 'Click, click, click.' Hers only clicked once. Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn't feel safe, but they let her still get on the ride."

Six Flags expressed sadness over the death and said it was temporarily closing the section of the park around the accident site. It didn't say how long the area would be closed. A message left for Parker by The Associated Press was not returned.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this difficult time," the park's statement said.

The Texas Giant reaches 14 stories high and has a drop of 79 degrees and a bank of 95 degrees. It can carry up to 24 riders. The ride first opened in 1990 as an all-wooden coaster but underwent a $10 million renovation in 2010 to install steel-hybrid rails before reopening in 2011.

Brown said she was next in line behind the woman and saw her being strapped into her seat next to her son.

"We heard her screaming. We were like, 'Did she just fall?'" Brown said. Continued...

Arlington police Sgt. Christopher Cook, the department spokesman, referred all questions to Parker. No other details were available.

In another amusement park accident Friday, a boat on an Ohio thrill ride accidentally rolled backward down a hill and flipped over in water when the ride malfunctioned, injuring all seven people on it. Operators stopped the Shoot the Rapids water ride after the accident, which occurred on the ride's first hill, the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, said.

In 1999, a 28-year-old Arkansas woman drowned and 10 other passengers were injured when a raft-like boat on the Roaring Rapids ride at Six Flags overturned in 2 to 3 feet of water about 200 feet from the end of the ride.

Six Flags Over Texas opened in 1961 as the first amusement park in the Six Flags system. It is 17 miles west of downtown Dallas.
